*grumble*
I recently replaced the PC speaker set in the living room that left with Tracy with the floor model of a Logitech Z-2300 set - lots of bass, which I didn't care about when I got my last set of speakers but am much more interested in now that I often listen to techno and industrial. The satellite speakers have an issue, probably from abuse at the store, and buzz annoyingly if the system's turned up very much. This morning they were really bugging me, so I yanked one off to see how difficult it would be to replace.
Most speakers on the market are 8-ohm, with a few high-end ones weighing in at 4 ohms. The amplifier is designed areound the input impedance of the speakers for good efficiency and accurate response, so of course when I put the Logitech satellites on my meter I was quite irritated to discover that they're 6.7 ohms. I'll still replace them with the little 8-ohm bookshelf speakers that have been floating around my storage space for 10 years or so, but it's irritating to find that they're nonstandard. I'm fortunate at least that they're lower-impedance than the ones I'm replacing them with; going in the other direction can damage the amplifier in the long term.
