(one more before I go outta town)
[8] Takeshi "Beat" Kitano
I love Kitano-san! I was in a movie watching mood last night, so after watching The Pit & The Pendulum, I got on Netflix and watched Outrage. He wrote, directed, edited, and had a role in the movie. And just ... yeah yakuza movie ftw.
I know that he started as a comedian, and in television shows, but I never caught onto Kitano until his movies. He's had roles in films like Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Battle Royale 1 & 2, Gonin, Johnny Mnemonic, and Takeshi Miike's Izo.
Sonatine was one of the first of his directed movies that I saw and I fell in love with the style immediately. After that I watched Hana-bi (Fireworks), and Brother (sometimes cited as one of the best yakuza films ever by fans). Dolls was pretty good, and he made a Zatoichi film! Kitano is known for his violent movies and stylish editing, he has a way with stories, and I think he's a wonderful actor. If you like crime movies, yakuza movies, or violent gun battles - hell, if you like Japanese cinema, then you should definitely check out a film by "Beat"
