Outside

At the risk of being hanged for blasphemy, I will posit this to you all:

It is beautiful outside.

Today in Chicago is the kind of day where nature screams, "I will not be ignored. I will not be pushed aside for the priorities of the world that you have created for yourselves." Today is the kind of day that can only be enjoyed if you aren't trying to get somewhere, if you have nothing "important" to do at the office downtown, nothing "pressing" outside the house. Today is the kind of day that you can only enjoy if you put everything you "have" to do aside and sit down with your warm beverage of choice and stare out the window at the driving storm as it stymies all those people who decided that shopping or work was more important than playing in the yard with their kids. It's bitter cold, windy, and it's snowed a foot in less than 24 hours, although it's hard to tell exactly how much because it keeps getting blown up and shifted around every time the wind changes direction. No one within 50 miles is driving faster than 20 miles an hour, I can tell you that. Boy, if you're trying to get some work done at the office today, I sure as hell pity you...it'll take you longer to get there than you'll have to work before you're forced to head back out in order to get home before your kids go to bed. Or maybe you'll decide that work really is that much more important, that you can spare one more day of watching them inch closer to the moment that they no longer belong to you, that they head out into the world to do exactly the same thing you're doing right now. But if that's your choice, I hope it makes you happy. Me, I'm thinking about bundling up, heading back out, and admiring the way the wind whips snow from rooftop to rooftop, enjoying one day in Evanston where I can be pretty sure that no one is going to run me down in a car as I cross the street. Have a good night, all.

beauty, life, nature
