Minding the Store

I ended up watching that new show on TBS Minding the Store when it started a few weeks ago. I have watched it every week since, partly because I have no life and am always home on Sunday nights at 9pm, and partly because I’m actually kind of interested in the show, in a rubbernecking-as-I-pass-an-accident sort of way.

I actually kind of like Pauly Shore. The Son-In-Law and Jury Duty entertain me. I haven’t seen Pauly Shore Is Dead, but will probably rent it sometime soon because now I’m interested.

The show is about Shore trying to revive his career while he runs The Comedy Store for his mom. You get to see him dealing with business stuff, but also make really pathetic attempts to get an acting job, and you also find out what is probably too much about his love life. He’s going to a sex therapist, and at age 38 is just now figuring out that casual sex with a different woman every night is a little immature, and so you also get to see him try really pathetically to have a successful date.

One of the parts I found the most entertaining was Pauly’s attempt to convince his agents he was ready for a serious role. They asked him to put together a tape of him doing a serious scene. He chose a scene from The Black Godfather in which he played a pimp talking to a drug dealer on the street. He was terrible. His agents laughed at him. The next episode consisted of him taking acting classes.

Watching this show, I feel bad for Pauly Shore. He is not going to be able to do serious acting because he is too uncomfortable with himself. He can’t stop doing the Son-In-Law, “Buh-dee” persona long enough to do one serious scene, and he also can’t stop doing that persona long enough to keep from pissing off or alienating the few girls he can get to date him.

I don’t know if the show will be back for another season, but I do want to find out how things turn out for Pauly Shore.
