Alright, right now I'm fixing a computer. I had to totally reformat the drive. The problem could have been avoided too.
1. Don't watch G4 Tech TV, it makes you think you know computers, but you don't.
2. Don't run file sharing.
3. Use an anti-spyware program. Adaware, Spybot or Microsoft Anti-Spyware. USE IT!
4. Use an antivirus. AVG (grisoft) is a free program for anti-virus. AND USE IT!
5. Firewall. I recommend a harware firewall first off. Failing that Windows XP has a built in firewall. Failing either of those Zone Alarm works well. Never run more than one firewall at a time unless you know what you're doing.
6. Defragment. Defrag your computer ATLEAST once a week. Always.
7. Don't Delete, use Uninstall. Always always always uninstall programs, don't delete them. Deleting them just causes problems, uninstall them to get it cleaned up.
8. Don't run anything you download off the internet unless you know what it is. Safe file types are .jpg, .gif, .png, other image types. .doc files are NOT safe. They may contain macros that can harm your computer. Always scan new files such as .exe before opening them. Never open a file if you don't recognise it's extention.
9. Don't piss off hackers, people you don't know, or me. In todays era you can get a lot of info on people including their address and phone number online. Combined with the other information you can get online, this isn't safe.
These are just a few safe use tips.
