on the graduation of thisspacevacant

When I first met Chad, he was working at a call center. Or a gas station. He wasn't sure he wanted to go to college.

But he did - to the State University of West Georgia. And he wasn't sure he wanted to transfer to UGA. Not sure he was good enough to get in, not sure he was good enough to stay in, and not sure it was worth it.

But he did. By all appearances, Chad wandered into academic life, wandered to Athens, wandered into the English department, and, today, wandered away with a B.A. in English.

Earning a degree isn't the hardest thing you can do in your life, but it isn't easy, either. It is a credit to Chad that he graduated from college the same way I've seen him reach any other goal: calmly, making no visible progress, with an intimate understanding of where slack can be found in Georgia bureaucracies, at a pace all his own with an arbitrary deadline. In other words, Chad made this shit look easy.

Chad, I am so proud of you today. Congratulations.
