I love these two characters. I've often created original characters within the Labyrinth fandom, from Jareth's brothers to uncles to friends to changeling mortals and goblins. However, this is the first time where the two MAIN characters are playing second fiddle to originals.
Erin and Kieran are thrown into an immediately awkward and difficult situation. Kieran is ordered by his father to abduct Sarah Williams and intentionally takes Erin instead, recognizing her as the daughter of the goblin king. He knows that he's condemning a child to death, but he doesn't realize that this kid has got stones (or I guess considering the fandom 'crystals') to spare, and she tries to escape more than once. He finds her admirable for this, if a little foolish, and starts to feel affection for his victim. I believe the phrase used was Stockholm syndrome in reverse. Before long, affection has turned into love, which drives him out of his skin, because she's a twelve year old girl.
In Erin's case, she isn't certain how to view him. Kieran continuously saves her, sometimes putting his skin on the line in the process, but there's a part of her that rebels against him because he kidnapped her. She begins to rely on him without realizing it, and even develops an affection for him as well. She trusts him to protect her, even after she finds out that he's leading her to her death.
Needless to say their relationship is a little messed up from the start.
The sad part is, while Kieran and Erin are working through the more awkward and troublesome points of their relationship (Kieran is NOT a pedophile and is horrified that he's attracted to a twelve year old), Sarah and Jareth are working through the more angsty points of their own. First and foremost, they haven't seen each other in about thirteen years. Second, Erin is dreamborne, and Jareth's daughter (hence why she's been kidnapped in the first place). The last knowledge Jareth had of Sarah's life was that she was getting married, and that was the last time either of them saw each other until their daughter is kidnapped. Sarah's also not telling Jareth a few facts, like that Erin is his daughter.
Still, all of this is happening in the background, because the story is about exactly who is mentioned in the title: The Goblin King's Daughter.
Go figure that she'd have mom and dad's personality rolled into one twelve year old package. Poor, Poor Kieran.
