Grace could tell it was a special day. Not only did the house smell really really good, but Mommy had dressed her in a really pretty dress too. And Daddy told her that both Dean AND Sammy were going to be coming over too

Alice had settled on bringing a pie. It seemed rude to arrive without anything at all. Then again, it might be seen as rude to bring one, as if she was implying that whatever pies they might or might not have would be insufficient somehow, or if, heaven forbid, she chose a flavor that someone despised or was deathly allergic to. And that was when Alice realized she was far overthinking the matter, and she would bring an apple pie and hope it was received in much the manner it was intended.
She knocked hesitantly and instructed herself very firmly not to fidget.
Dean had been keeping an ear out for the door, so he was the one to answer it. "Hey," he said, stepping back to give Alice room to enter. "Glad you could make it!"
"I wouldn't have missed it," Alice said, holding out the pie and bobbing a very abbreviated curtsy. "Thank you ever so much for having me. Oh, my heaven, something smells amazing."
"If this is how people celebrate leaving England, the entire island should exile itself," she said, sniffing the air happily. "That smells divine. I can't thank you enough."
Not because of the food. But it was easier to say, if she pretended it was.
"I did," she laughed, holding it out again and affecting a mock-dramatic pose. "I slaved all morning. I made the crust from scratch. I agonized over the apple selection. Inadequate apples were simply thrown away."
The pie still had the shrinkwrap on, from the store. With a handy sticker that said "APPLE."
"Conveniently," Alice laughed, "the pies they sell in stores are proven not to cause anyone to become violently ill. At least one would hope so. They have no business selling them, otherwise."
"Yeah, there'll be no getting sick from the food today," Dean said. "Well, I suppose you could eat till you puke, but that kinda puts a damper on dessert."
She knocked hesitantly and instructed herself very firmly not to fidget.
