With his birthday coming up this Friday, John was feeling more reflective than usual. Generally he tried to avoid too much introspection about where he was in his life, but this year it wasn't actually a painful prospect. He had both his boys with him, not only safe, but happy and thriving. Then there was Zoe and the new baby on the way...

All in all it was a position he wouldn't have thought he'd be in a year ago.

So he was humming almost cheerfully under his breath as he went through his usual hunting newsgroups and contacts.
