Had my farewell party for me yesterday night. Six people came over, and we watched DVDs, used my buildings hot tub and basically talked a lot. I felt decently proactive on account of how I actually cooked something this time - breaded chicken and also a homemade version of macaroni and cheese. (The mac 'n' cheese was actually supposed to have chicken and brocoli in it, but
ezazahaz is a dirty hippie vegetarian so I left the chicken out. And I didn't have any breadcumbs so on the chicken I used...cornflakes.)
And as always, I continue the tradition of over-feeding my guests: every time I have a party, there are always plenty of leftovers. My main problem is always get concerned as to having a good variety, so I buy, say, four bags of chips when two would probably be fine.
Of course, I'm leaving in two days, so that's not really a good thing. So...every person that came was bundled off upon leaving with one or two food products shoved into their arms. Everything from vanilla wafers, to lemonade, to straight-up booze.
So, if nothing else, hopefully everyone liked their "goodie bags". Ah heh heh...heh. *sheepish face*
skylark913 also took Zydrate with her. I'll miss my little beta, but I really don't think see how bringing him home on a three-hour car ride is going to work, so. Yeah. Best to pass him along to a new, more localized home.
So, the party started at five, but other than Jan, most people didn't get there for at least another half an hour. Something pretty funny did happen, though, or at least it was amusing to me.
See, Jan wanted to go to the hot tub, but Rey was supposed to be arriving...soonish...so I wanted to wait until she was there at least. Jan was like, "Okay, but can we watch the 13th episode of Dollhouse??" Because I have the DVDs, she doesn't, and I'd been telling her a bit about it and she wanted to see it.
So, I put in the DVD. The episode had literally just started playing, not even two minutes in, maybe, when MJ showed up. Now, when she saw we were already (..."already") watching something, she pretty much sat down without fuss to let us go at it.
So, she really didn't miss anything. But MJ has never seen Dollhouse, nor has any idea what it's even about. And now she's watching the episode that's: half-flashbacks, half post-apocalyptic far-flung future, jumps between one segment to another with little direct explanation what's going on, is set ten years after the current canon's timeline, and has nothing to do with the traditional format and little to do with the usual major characters, at all. It'd be like if the first episode of Lost you ever saw was "Flashes Before Your Eyes". Or the first episode of Firefly you ever saw was "Out of Gas". Only, worse, because at least in those examples there's some visual connection between the flashback storyline and the "present" one, and in "Epitaph One"...not so much. To someone who can't even recognize the characters on sight, anyway. Hoo boy.
But anyway, we keep watching...and about halfway through the episode, Rey shows up. Rey is a huge Whedon fan, but she hasn't made the jump to Dollhouse (yet), either. And, again, she's starting halfway through the episode. Not to mention by this point Jan keeps asking me eager, confused questions about "the Chinese army" and "What happened to her scars??". And MJ just looks over at Rey like, "Dude, don't even look at me, I have no idea."
And then, finally, Jess and Jess show up...about right after the last flashback, and ten minutes before the show even ends. They have, in fact, watched all of Dollhouse - but of course by the time they come in, none of the characters or events they'd be familiar with are actually on the screen anymore. All they're in time to see is the fact that everything has gotten fucked up.
So they're just all like "...", and Rey is all like "...?", and MJ is all like "...??", and really, the only ones who aren't horribly confused are me and Jan, or at least as unconfused as you can be after watching "Epitaph One", if you at least have the prior knowledge to sorta sort out what's going on.
And so Jeff and Jess are like "So, um...?", and I'm like "Dude, it's a lot to explain", and MJ and Rey are like "Well, don't look at us", and so Jan takes a crack at it and tells them about the Chinese army, and the signal, and Technology is Bad, and finally I jump in with, "You can get this episode online, you know."
And Jess is just like, "Yeah...we should look into that."
So...yeah. I thought that was pretty funny.
Anyway, then we all went and chillaxed in the...not fully-filled, not working properly, occupied by cigar-smoking ghetto-ish peeps who I thought were kinda giving us the stank-eye all the while...hot tub. There was a lot of splash fighting, talk of good vs bad zombie and vampire books, good and bad in webcomic series, why real life sucks, and general fun times.
After that we went back to my apartment, Dr. Just-Friends literally strolled on in and joined us (the door was propped for ventilation) and I put dinner together and made a horrible mess while everyone watched my copy of The Emperor's New Groove, on account of how MJ and Rey had never seen it, GASP.
After that, I force-fed people a few mini cupcakes, we talked a little longer, and everyone but Rey and Sam headed home. Me and Sam had strawberry shots (hollow out large-ish strawberry, fill with Baja Rosa, top with whipped cream) and Rey had the "virgin" alternative (strawberry with whipped cream). And we watched an episode of Firefly, and some stuff on the internet.
Then Rey left, but Sam needed to chill a bit longer to sober up, so we watched another episode of Firefly and I tidied up a bit.
All in all, I think it was pretty good for a sort of Last Hurrah. I had a good time; I just hope everyone else did too.
I was supposed to go to Team Trivia tonight, possibly, but when I left a message after I got off from work (last day at the Bistro, woot) Dr. Just-Friends never called me back, and it's probably for the best anyway, since I should probably start packing, plus I feel all groggy and hot.
Anyway, I'll be seeing most of them this weekend at the Great Lakes Faire...and no matter what else happens, I plan on making it back to see these people as much as humanly possible.
