It was raining, hard. Fit to wash every car off the road, and maybe flood the whole damn world away while it was at it.

Oh, if only. If only.

She stopped in a diner, looking as much for a hot bite to eat as she was just wanting to get someplace warm and dry. She never felt hungry, much - not with her stomach constantly all tied up in knots.

She sat at the counter. She ordered a sandwich.

She sat there for awhile, head down, staring at her hands and straight on through. She was shaking, her clothes clinging to her skin, her hair hanging down in front of her face in thick unruly strands.

Her hair hid her face, and her face was wet. With the way her lips trembled it might look like she was crying.

But she never cried, not anymore.

“Excuse me, miss?”

There was a voice beside her, polite but concerned, and she looked up automatically.

He leaned against the counter right next to her, head slightly tilted so he could better look down into her face. He was a tall man, broad shoulders, brown hair and big blue earnest eyes.

He was also wearing a police officer’s uniform, which normally alone would’ve been enough to make her tense, if not bolt flat-out. But for some reason, she didn’t feel that way, looking at him.

There was something about his face. It made her feel safe. Calm.

“Are you alright?” he asked, and he had the kind of voice that said he wasn’t asking because it was his job, he was asking because he wanted to. Because he really did care.

“I’m fine,” she told him, softly.

In spite of herself, in spite of the weather, in spite of everything else, when she gazed up into his eyes she gave a little smile.

He smiled back. “Hi. I’m Kevin.”

“Monica.” She never hesitated anymore. But this time, she almost felt like telling the truth.

“Well, hello Monica.” His smile only got wider.

Hers did too. It was strange.

Because it was the first time, in a long time, that she didn’t immediately feel like running.
