Having fun with the Charger

The Charger is a funny Battlemech. Way too big for its speed or its role, but modern technology can help make it into something kind of scary. With an infinite budget, this is probably what I'd do to the Charger:

  • Make it faster. (TSM and a Supercharger for emergencies)
  • Slap in an XXL Engine. Less survivable and way more expensive, but it gives ( Read more... )

In theory, not bad. However:
- Is this even a Charger anymore? It barely shares anything with the classic aside from tonnage.
- While theoretically powerful, the use-to-cost ratio is retarded. You're talking about a mech that costs as much as a small dropship that's meant to murder Locusts. Not even to mention the two companies of Phoenix Hawks.

Most Charger variants seem to have little to do with the original. I was trying to go with the fluff idea of "an 80 ton mech that goes around punching scout mechs in the face" while trying to keep an energy-weapon armament. I tinkered with a mostly PPC-armed version, but I thought it came out too much like the CGR-KMZ from RS 3050U (well, sans the MML-9, I wanted to avoid non-energy weapons as much as I could).

But I know exactly what you mean.

Hm, hate to double post, but I can't edit my comments so...

Maybe something with an XL, near-max Hardened Armor, 10 DHS, and a weapons array of 4 LPPCs and a SPL (in the head). The fluff notes the Charger was a tough one to kill back in the day, and the armament array mimics the classic Charger distribution. It's still hideously expensive, but that's what you get when you're using an XL in an 80-tonner when you should just make the 'Mech lighter. Could probably get DHS in there to get to 6/9/0 movement after a few turns of running and unloading its array of popguns.

See, now that would feel more like a Charger to me. Doesn't address the problem that you'd have to be a damn fool to field it, but it would at least SEEM like a Charger. (Also go for torso-mounted cockpit and mount a 5th LPPC in the head anyway.)
