He smiled as the large red sofa sunk under his small frame and he could finally loosen his black silk tie.
Ninomiya Kazunari had been working as a waiter in 'Cafe' Arashi' for just under 2 months and the pleasant atmosphere and good company had made him content in his working life (even if he was getting low wages). The restaurant catered for a predominately wealthy clientele - and the decor showed it. Crystal chandeliers, marble flooring and elegant flower arrangements gave Cafe' Arashi an expensive atmosphere and the high-class food gave it an expensive menu.
The manager, Matsumoto-san, was a tall and well dressed man not much older then Nino. However his family owned alot of business and his charmingly handsome appearance had got him far in life, fast. He had started the restaurant business himself and his costly advertising campaign and perfect teeth had made the small establishment very popular. Unfortunately, under his well defined features and impeccable business skills was a sharp tongue and sadistic personality that ensured that the staff were always trying to stay on his good side, something Nino wasn't very good at.
The kitchen staff were professional and well paid, normally keeping to themselves and simply churning out delicious handmade food as if it was the easiest thing in the world.
Nino didn't often talk to the chefs - all skill and no personality he would say.
However the other four waiters had quickly become Nino's best friends and he could go to work everyday knowing they would brighten his day.
The first waiter Nino had met was quiet and a bit spacey. It took 3 minutes and alot of stuttering before he managed to introduce himself as, "Ohno Satoshi, sorry."
Nino wondered at the time why someone was apologizing for their name but he smiled anyway and declared "Ohno-kun? No it doesn't suit you. I like Oh-chan better!"
The waiter had blushed happily under his brownish bangs and so their friendship began. It was a shock to Nino when he found out Ohno was a good three years older, but after a few weeks he noticed he wasn't so much spacey as observant. He made the conclusion that Ohno fit his age after all.
Even though he wasn't talkative customers adored Ohno and he was often tipped for having 'such a cute smile'. His innocent charm seem to work on the Manager too as he never scolded Ohno like the others, he instead laughed and told him to 'try harder you will be fine next time'. This was the nearest thing to a compliment Nino had heard leave Matsumoto-san's lips.
The youngest waiter was also the most clumsy, none of the staff could remember a week where Aiba Masaki hadn't smashed a plate (or even a stack) by tripping over furniture or himself. But this only added to his cheerful, bubbly personality and made him great fun to work with.
Then their was Sakurai Sho, the sensible one that normally managed to catch Aiba as he fell or stopped the manager from flipping when the others took a very long break. Nino had never quite been sure why such a promising and capable person had ended up as a waiter but he sensed it was something Sho-kun wouldn't like to talk about. He trusted him to tell them when he was ready.
Lastly was Ikuta Toma the second youngest, (Some of the female clientele also said he was the best looking, not that Nino believed it). He wasn't quiet but wasn't talkative either and Nino found his wholesome laugh infectious. It had surprised Nino when Toma made a sly come-back at Matsumoto-san, something the other staff were too scared to do, even more shocking was that Matsumoto-san only shot him a look and stalked off. Apparently you can survive a dagger in between the eyes - Toma was living proof.
The waiter's job was relatively easy; serve the customers and try to comply with what ever requests they have. Ohno said one time a particularly eccentric customer wanted Aiba in a maid outfit. He also said Sho still has pictures.
However some customers saw this personal service as a chance to try and have their way with the waiters. Matsumoto-san didn't tolerate any kind of harassment; one time he floored a particularly 'touchy' man that groped Ohno. Nino respected him a bit more for that.
"Ne, Nino-kun?" Aiba's voice snapped him back from his trip down memory lane. "Your break's over and manager-san said before he left 'If you don't get your lazy ass into gear and work for once I will shove your payslip right up your--"
"Ok I get it, Thanks Aiba-chan" Nino sighed. Even 5 minutes before closing Matsumoto was a slave-driver. The chefs had even left!
Nino straightened his tie and smoothed down his crisp white shirt. Shuffling past the giggling Aiba he walked out of the staff room and into the main restaurant. It had been a quiet Friday night, the usual droves of happy business men celebrating the coming weekend were missing and only a few of the regulars had come in. It was so quiet Matsumoto-san had given Toma and Ohno the night off, a rare (and bias in Nino's opinion) act of kindness.
Nino half-heartedly began cleaning tables and musing to himself over how much hard-work he would have to do to get the manager to give him a night off.
Lost in thought Nino didn't hear the door open or a black-clad man enter.
"Where's the manager?" A gravelly voice in Nino's ear made him jump and turn to face the man.
"Sorry Sir the Manager is busy at the moment and we are just closing. Is there something I can help you with?" Nino eyed the man suspiciously. He was wearing a smart, tailored coat but underneath his clothes were shabby - there was something Nino didn't like about him but he couldn't place what it was.
"Where is the manager?" He asked again - a hint of anger in his voice. This is bad... Nino thought, If this man acts up there will be trouble.
"Im sorry he isn't available. We are about to close so I'm going to ask you to leave." Nino's voice didn't sound as convincing as he would of liked. Out of the corner of his eye he could see Sho standing by the counter with a troubled look on his face.
"Are you going to MAKE me leave, kid?" The man sneered taking a step closer to Nino, he could smell the alcohol on his breath.
"Sir, I'm asking you to leave."
Before he could react the man grabbed his shoulders and slammed Nino into the wall, jarring his hip bone on a table edge. Taken off guard Nino lost the ability to function and he barely registered Sho yelling and running towards him.
"STAY BACK!" The man shouted. At some point he had reached into his pocket and was now drawing out a small gun. Nino froze. Shit!
"Just put that down. If you leave now we won't cause any trouble." Sho sounded calm but the way his hands were shaking betrayed his nerves. Nino wide-eyed and panicked looked from the gun to Sho.
"I want ALL your cash...WHERE IS IT?" The man was shouting now and lifted the gun to Nino's chest. Nino's breath caught in his throat I'm going to die...Shit this is real!
"I'll give you the money just drop the gun." Sho took at tentative step closer and held his hands out.
Terrified, Nino didnt see the figure coming out of the staff room. During the commotion Aiba had obviously heard the shouting and skidded into the restaurant.
"Nino!!!!" He shouted seeing the gun.
The man turned towards Aiba, everything seemed in slow motion, Nino saw what was about to happen and tried to push the man with his free arm back but he was to strong. Sho was screaming for Aiba to run but he was rooted to the spot in terror.
The gun fired, time caught up, Nino screamed.
