After a few months of playing the most enjoyable, although mentally taxing,
Bushido, Andy and I settled down last night to play a couple of games that required a little less in the way of brain power.
I have to say that I was a little reticent about doing anything last night, especially given my current work load, but given the opportunity to de-stress with a bit of light gaming, I'm happy I did so. The first game we played (which arrived that very day from
Hobbies and Games) was
Warhammer:Diskwars, a 'wargame light' game that I've really brought to play with Jonty. Although we only played the learning scenario, I can tell that the game has a bit of hidden depth to it, while still being easy enough for a 9-year-old to play. I say that as while I lost, the use of the activation cards and the variable abilities of certain units will pose a challenge to any experience wargamer to master. I'm definitely looking forward to playing this with Jonty tonight as a follow-up.
The second game was the now decade old(!)
Wings of War World War One air combat game. I have the first three box sets and a couple of models, but it rarely get play time these days in the face of my X-Wing collection (which uses very similar mechanics). That said, after playing I was reminded as to why this was such a great little game, and why I need to get the last core expansion from this original run.
So from going into the evening stressed and unwilling, I definitely left enthused and looking forward to more 'beer and pretzels' wargaming in the future.
