About Fili

Keeping this hidden on LJ because voicing non-positive fandom opinion on tumblr is like social suicide and also because there's someone on my dash who lashed out at someone because of this. Ok, here it goes.

I don't care much about Fili. I don't hate him but I don't like him, either. Why? Because both PJ and Tolkien don't tell us much about him. I don't need to explain Tolkien, he doesn't describe the company aside from Thorin and Balin, but PJ is only slightly better in this case. Fili doesn't get much screen time and character development and that is the undisputable truth. It's like 'oh look, he's the heir so he's prepared for responsibilities now let's get back to Thorin's angsting'. I don't know enough about him to like him or hate him and that is the saddest thing that could happen to a character, esp. one who should be as important as he. Honestly, and this is just my opinion here, when I see people praising Fili on my dash, I feel that it's mostly headcannon. There's nothing wrong with headcannon but it's a subjective thing. It's not actually in the films so you shouldn't expect others to share your headcannon automatically. I agree that he's underappreciated but it's hard to find any explicit reason to appreciate him because the author and filmmaker don't seem to be interested in exploring his character and making me like him.

So, yeah. I've been thinking about this for a long while but kept it to myself because that aforementioned person on tumblr who shall remain nameless often goes 'how dare you not like Fili!!'. I don't feel like going into an argument of how I'm entitled to like/dislike/don't care about any character *eyerolls*

(and don't even get me started on Frerin and Dis. They could be Sauron's evil twins for all we know. They're 99% fanon.)
