Nerd Rant

For the longest time, my favorite superheroes have been limited to Wally West (the second Flash) and Rex Mason (Metamorpho). The Flash is still my favorite, don't get me wrong, but with both of them, they became my favorites because they were just cool-looking or whatever, and then I got into them as characters. Well, I have a new hero to add to the "arsenal." That'll be funny later.

The hero in question is one Roy Harper. This is the first time I've been so invested in a comic book hero as a character within the stories and then I started to get used to the rest of his persona. He started out as the sidekick to Green Arrow, Speedy. He was part of the original Teen Titans, as well.

In the 80s and 90s, comics started trying to hit the heavy subjects hard: aids, drugs, etc. Roy was thrown smack in the middle of it, no pun intended, and given a heroin addiction. (As a side note, I wish I were around for more of these, some were pretty hilarious. My favorite is when they "revealed" that the Pied Piper was gay.)

Roy spent some time trying to be a superhero in his own right: Arsenal, using guns and crossbows more than regular bows. And while on a secret mission, had an affair with Cheshire, resulting 9 months later in a daughter, who Cheshire just left for Roy to raise. And, later on, Roy joined the Justice League as Red Arrow.

Then DC decided to just shit all over him in the last few months. The villain Prometheus set off a series of bombs in the heart of Roy's home, Star City, killing his daughter, Lian. Then he ambushed the Justice League's base and tore Roy's right arm off. Now he's got a robot arm and he's totally relapsing. It's all pretty exciting, and I can't wait to see what becomes of him. Maybe he'll become a villain, maybe some sort of anti-hero, or maybe they'll make him boring again.

Nerd excitement, done.
