I am not a bum. I'm a jerk

Sometimes, talking to Jasper makes me so cynical.

He came over yesterday, and we just sat around and talked for at least a couple hours. We talked about pretty much everything, but the focus of our conversation to begin with was on the nature of consumers. I don't understand why people buy some of the things they do, all the money people just burn away. Don't get me wrong, I understand buying quality, and I understand putting money into something just for the joy of it, but not spending money you don't have. I was at a friend's house a couple of weeks ago, and her mom was really careful about the furniture, which I can understand, but my friend leaned over to me and whispered, "Don't worry about her, she's still paying for all this." I just can't conceive of that. Loading up credit cards with money you don't have to buy something that isn't a necessity. I was out with my friend Jessie the other day, thrifting, and there were couches all over the place. I could have picked up a sofa for $40. And the nicest couches were no more than a few hundred. Why would you pay thousands of dollars for the same thing? Yet, people do. And they don't understand. And Jasper brought up American Beauty.

"This isn't life, it's just stuff. And it's become more important to you than living. Well, honey, that's just nuts."

So, our conversation moved to how people value their things and what happiness is and why people don't live within their means and so on. People don't do what they want to do. People do what they think they should do. They go to school, they get a job, they spend more money than they have and they live in debt for the rest of their lives.

"I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need."

I'm gonna be such a bum when I grow up.
