As a writer I know more about God than most people. As an artist I see the world a little clearer than others. When I see someone sitting, I see their body posture as an expression-their hands a detail, and their movements a masterpiece. People say that God, whoever he or she may be, watches us and controls our every movement. It’s simply not true. I, like God, have created a world. I have breathed life into hundreds of people-like, Jonathan Amari (who’s not to bad a fellow, just a lot of scars), Captain Calmir (takes himself far too seriously), Joanne Russak (she’s doing the best she can), or Theodore Kirk (mechanic who’s got a good eye). I, too, watch their lives, but I am far from controlling them.
Theodore Kirk was born on March 7th 2010, and his existence was merely meant to be four paragraphs. As a mechanic, he was simply supposed to get ready for work, feel sullen about his girlfriend leaving, point up at the sky and say, “I think something bad will happen today.” He was absolutely correct. Something horrific happened that day and his world was shattered. Did Theodore Kirk die? No, far from it. As I was joking with one of my friends, “he is named for you and he will die terribly.” But I stopped laughing as I watched my computer monitor and realized Theodore didn’t care what I wanted. As the story progressed I knew precisely where I was going to drop bombs, and destroy buildings. Theo’s girlfriend, the one that left him, ended up becoming a solitary voice on the radio-a beacon for humanity, and a voice for hope. Now Theo and her have a nice room together at the survivor’s camp, not exactly a honeymoon suite but it’s better than having an accident on the job.
God may have created us, but He doesn’t control the details. Like any author, He merely sets events into motion. He knows the larger picture, but sometimes minute details slip out of His control.
He’s an artist and so his characters all have a twisted humor, but He’s not the only one in charge of them.
You have your own story to play out.
