"Traitor," they hissed. Glaucon didn't see how.

Oh, yes, he had betrayed their principles and their hearts' desires. But he had done what he had promised to do, no more, no less. He had stuck to the letter and if they hadn't seen where his true loyalties lay, always, it was their fault.

"You knew who and what I am when you made the deal," he pointed out. "You knew, and so you cannot claim you were misinformed. If you did not understand what I would do that was your business."

They swore at him and made further comment as they lay dying. He stared down at them with detached curiosity.

"You betrayed us. You were supposed to be there."

Glaucon shrugged. He had arranged for suitable strength and ability to be there in his place. That they hadn't made adequate use of the resources was not his problem.

"That is what you believe. I see a different truth. It does not matter anymore."

It didn't. They died cursing him. And he left, still not understanding where he had done anything wrong.
