Baby steps.......or huge giant ogre sized ones....

"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer." - Barack Obama, Nov 4, 2008 Acceptance Speech

Nick gave me this quote yesterday, and it's been my FB status since:
"Rosa sat so that Martin could walk, Martin walked so that Obama could run, Obama ran so that our children could fly."

I'll admit, there were moments last night, especially during Obama's acceptance, that I got a little choked up. Senator McCain made a great speech as well.

I'll also admit that I am disappointed in certain American citizens who used that time to boo and in some Americans who have since made their disappointment the vehicle to show their ignorance and racism. I guess, however, that it's better to know than not? Maybe?

Prop 8 was passed. This is where baby steps comes in. Perhaps gay marriage and a black President couldn't happen both at once. Too much change too fast breeds bad things in people. I can only hope that at some point in the future we can see the importance and validity in granting everyone in the country equal rights. We're supposed to be the "better" country, right?

For most of today I haven't thought too much about the President Elect, except for the email I got from him (really from his campaign). Part of me is hopeful for the future, but part of me has this deep feeling of foreboding, like a sense of doom. I'm not sure if others feel it, or if I'm protecting myself from disappointment the first time something goes wrong. We shall see, I suppose.

For now: Our children have a chance to fly.
