All Esme remembered of the music festival was the pain. All that disjointed sound, swirling around her and she couldn't grab ahold of anything to pick it apart. Separate the sound so it stopped hurting. She'd stopped walking barely three feet past the entrance of the fair, feet firmly planted in the ground and she refused to move for a moment, just staring at something only she could see and it scared her. She also didn't seem to hear John when he spoke to her, calling her name and asking what was wrong.
And then, the applause and shouts from the excited crowd hit, adding to the chaotic swirl of black and red she saw around her. It had been too much for her to process, all that sound hitting at once and she passed out. John caught her before she hit the ground and carried her out of there, as far away from the sound as she could get her and even farther than that. He managed to carry her to the crap hotel they had booked for the duration of the music festival.
Her hero.
She woke up on her stomach on the one bed in the room, John half asleep beside her. They looked at each other before Esme spoke, sounding embarrassed.
"Hi."
