Fandom Fool

Don't worry, I already got my friends by text this morning - my hard drive has crashed, you know. All the fic gone. I distressed a few with that one! :D

Anyways, fandom. Fickle thing really - once you're in, you're in. And suddenly no film or TV show is safe - you want to ship, you want to read, you want to go mad.

I am mad.

However, it's worse if you watch with people who are also fanatics. Like my slash cult. With whom I watched Master and Commander

Don't know what I was expecting - I'd heard it was good, I knew there were both PotC and HH crossovers with it. And c'mon, British Naval Drama always smacks of slash. Because men confined together on a boat for months at a time is a recipe for homoeroticism.

But I wasn't quite prepared for this level of slash. Doctor Stephen Maturin fairly simmered at Captain Jack Aubrey for the entirety of the film. Then Jack is chasing the stupid Acheron when he promised Stephen he could study on the Galapagos Islands, breaking his word. Stephen is very upset. Then Stephen is accidentally shot by the Sgt of the Marines, and the assistant says he should be on land for the op to remove the bullet. Jack breaks off his search for this ship, returns to the islands and hoplds Stephen while the good doctor operates on himself (wicked scene, fantastic acting). Gives Stephen his chance to study and Stephen abandons his samples so he can tell Jack the Acheron is lurking on the other side of the island. Aww, the loyalty! The duty! The lust!

Tis a good film. And a good fandom, cos it has an extended bookverse too. Which means more films and lots of wonderful fic. Yay!

And then I marathoned Battlestar Galactica yesterday with marzie_pan. She despaired of my inane grinning whenever Jamie Bamber appeared on screen but oh, the HOT! That man is beautiful and talented and *sigh*. I love him.

Now, here is what my fevered brain spat out after all that.

Kara/Lee! Never would I have thought, me who hated the idea of a female Starbuck, that I would be shipping for the two of them. But they are adorable and in love and it's a pleasure to watch. My greatest fear is that they're gonna leave Starbuck on Caprica for the second season. Which would suck. A lot.

My one problem with BSG is that the capability of all prevents serious comfort. Though Lee encouraging Kara to walk was a lovely little scene, and the deleted scene of them jogging together. He's teasing her about getting laid (not knowing that she called out his name whilst with Baltar - hee!) and she says 'frack you' (I lvoe sci fi swearing!) and he puppy dog eyes after her 'You don't look that bad. Really'. Was soooo sweet! But he worries about her when she's missing or off doing somethign stupid and it's lovely.

My second thought is that Lee gets a rough deal. Yes, he is an angry, bitter child at the beginning but he gets over that mostly and then he's trying to be the best he can, but it all comes down to the fact that he's not as good as Starbuck. Which is made abundantly clear to him, and Kara and Adama were hardly encouraging about it all. Poor Lee.

And then the finale in which he possibly has the worst couple of days EVER.
Kara sleeps with Baltar.
Kara punches him.
Kara vanishes off to goodness-knows-where without telling him anything.
Democracy is threatened so he commits mutiny by holding a gun to Tigh's head (which amused me no end)
He gets arrested
His father gets shot up by one of his pilots, who's actually a Cylon.

Great day. And no Kara comfort. Terrible.

I'm not sure it's a fandom I want to leap into, cos the show seems to be doing a fine job on its on. I may resort to fandom if Kara does indeed end up stranded on Caprica.

One last point: I have convinced myself Lee is a Cylon. The President never considered which Adama the Cylon was talking about and I think one of the main cast has to be, just for fun. marzie_pan just thinks I like the idea of hundreds of thousands of Lees. I'm not denying that it's an attractive idea. :D

ETA: Watched CSI:Miami 3x01. Abandon Fandom.
