BTW, in written Bond, does Bond refer to others by their surnames or given names? In his own thoughts?

Um ... *runs to bookshelf* It's difficult to say. I can't just open the book and find him addressing someone (there're just so many words!). He calls M 'sir'. Tatiana Romanova he calls 'Tania' ... when he's been shagging her, of course.

As a general rule I'd go with first names for women if he knows them, unless he's being polite in which case Miss/Mrs So-and-so.
Men by their surname, unless he knows them well. Or are his superior, in which case sir.

In his thoughts ... fairly similar, I suppose. Though not the sir thing.

BTW, when writing about James Bond he's always referred to as 'Bond'. He's only called James by people who know him (and women).
