glad fandom tidings, mostly

First off let me brag. I got lovely fanart for one of my Homestuck fics - Gamzee and Karkat hanging out (SFW, if you don't mind a bare chest), for this (NSFW) fic about what would happen if Gamzee underwent pupation, as a teenaged bug-based alien might.* I keep looking at Karkat's expression, it's perfect. "PUT A SHIRT ON. And don't eat anyone. Oh god, he is going to eat us all, isn't he. Why do I have to have my head bit off by Gamzee Makara? Why not someone less embarrassing, like Tavros's dead lusus? SERIOUSLY, PUT A SHIRT ON." And Gamzee's just like "heh. I AM LIKE UNTO MOTHERFUCKING FABIO. :o)"

* Answer: he and Karkat would bone. I started this fic for the Porn Battle fest, so...

Over the weekend I rewatched Thor, to see how I felt after having fallen for Avengers, and I really enjoyed it. A surprising amount, considering I didn't like it much at all the first time I watched it. This is starting to look like a worrying trend for Marvel flicks. How does one movie fandom, anyway? It has real people in it, who does that! (It's been a long time since Pirates of the Caribbean and I'm out of practice.)

Thoughts on Thor, take 2:
- I love everyone. On first viewing I thought every immortal except Heimdall, probably Volstagg, was a most enormous tool. Now - thank you, fandom for all that fic making all the characters seem more sympathetic and interesting - I love EVERYONE.

- For example, is Laufey supposed to be hot.

- Because Laufey's pretty hot. That sexy, sexy fungal growth on his joints. (Actually, I dig this monster-looking dude being calm and intelligent, cruel and uncompromising.) It's actually disappointing he's dead. To which, by the way: LOKI, YOU'RE A MESS. This always bears repeating.

- But wait! There is one person I continue to resent: that jotun who said "Run away home, Princess" to Thor. Without THAT master of diplomacy the whole plot wouldn't have happened! Frigga could've maybe taken a deep breath, called her sons dicks, and ruled a while as Odin had his revitalising nap. There, problem delayed for another few centuries.

- And actually it hadn't sunk in how much of a terrible person Thor could be. Fandral gets a sucking chest wound and everybody thinks they should retreat, but Thor blithely ignores them and continues having a party with beating up frost giants. Also, "Know your place, brother", hmph.

- I buy Thor's reformation on Earth now, and that doesn't have anything to do with fandom. He just went through a whole helluva lot. lost his power, kingdom, purpose, home, family, put everybody back home in a situation of threatening war which he then couldn't do anything about, thought he'd killed his dad. that sure ought to make a dent in just about anybody's behaviour. Maybe when I watched the first time, the redemption story line was too obvious to settle in as believable. "yes, right, time to grown and learn ... there he goes, on cue." But Thor did have a lot of reasons to grow humbler and kinder, and that he did it with some grace and a lot of optimism makes me like him even more.

- Same for Loki. I knew about the adoption spoiler and that he was the villain, so the descent was simply to be expected - but he lost nearly as much as Thor simply by that discovery, or at least that's what it felt like to him.

- PS holy cow is baby Loki cute. big fat blue smiling baby aaawww.

- Looking with Avengers-tinted glasses, I've picked the last smack that the Destroyer gave Thor as a serious flirtation on Loki's part with chaos. In Avengers he seems awed by the scale of what he can accomplish. I feel like he decided that he was going to make the Destroyer give a single hard hit, and then he would not look back to see whether Thor was dead or alive. One of the most tremendous actions he'd ever taken would be left partially up to luck or fate. And what possibilities might open up after that?

- The destruction of Jotunheim feels even worse. Their world is a slag heap and then it got DESTROYED MORE. And telling Thor that Odin died because of him remains an utterly transcendant dick move - I get Loki's motivations more now, but no. You don't do that!

- So, Darcy/Fandral. Did you know that there's a moment, before calling on the Bifrost so Thor & Co could go back home to stop Loki, where Fandral is holding Darcy's hand and clearly macking on her? That pairing would be pure romcom hilarity. Also I like Darcy/Jane now. The magic ability Darcy has of not taking anything seriously and sucking Jane down into that is pretty cute.

- The best part is in the extra scenes when Thor calls Loki "cow". Also good is when he goes "But ummmm ... howdoIlook?" I'm glad they didn't include that scene in the final cut, though, there was zero subtlety to it.

Does anyone watch Downton Abbey? I'm up to season 2, episode 2, and I just want to vent about bloody Mr Bates. WHAT A TOOLBOX. (I love him, but for crying out loud--) This noble silent sacrifice modus operandi is terrible for everybody involved and needs to stop!

i can't shut up!, fan babble, marvel cinematic universe, homestuck, omg heart
