Though I could also see, "After his time as Gen's personal bodyguard, managing the Guard was nothing."
Also, awwwwwww re. UNCLE COSTIS. He would be as abused by Gen and Attolia's kids as he is by Gen.
And I get the impression Gen is beaming 'LOVE ME YOU'RE ADORKABLE' at Costis from somewhere around the middle of KoA.
Yes yes he is! *grin* And I think people notice: right after the attempted assassination Gen's cousins are referring to Costis as Gen's "pet guard" and "your pet Costis".
Also because I am horrible and giggle at things like Gen turning up and going, "WHERE IS COSTIS I WANT HIM" and then guards telling Costis, "WHERE WERE YOU HE WANTED YOU LAST NIGHT". (THIS IS A TRUE STORY.)
1. re. Honour: when I see it as HONOUR I cannot help but recall this canon parody!Avatar moment in which parody!Zuko (head emo!Prince) was shown yelling "HONOUR!!!!" as his ship sank and he sank with it. But yes, Costis is a fundamentally decent person.

My reasoning also. Costis + stoic but loving golden retriever strikes me as a charming image. Or possibly some kind of wolfhound or shaggy, dignified sheepdog.

HAHAHA YES. That sounds right! As does his abuse by royal children, d'aaww. ...but damn, those children would be unholy terrors.
