Completely random things

(One of those times when there are random thoughts that don't make a coherent post, but I want to get them out anyway.)

After my computer playlist went on a Disney streak:

1. A line from "Prince Ali" in Aladdin: "Just try your best to stay calm/Brush up your Sunday salaam."

your Sunday salaamREALLY. REALLY? It's amazing how words can ( Read more... )

I vote the most shocking plot twist as: GOKUDERA GETS OVER HIS PATHOLOGICAL THING AGAINST WOMEN (that sort of is in the same category as "Gokudera gets het"). I am actually not sure this really applies to S.P. as he thinks she's an ALIEN. BUT I WILL TAKE WHAT I GET.

I was actually deeply unsurprised by Rasiel, actually. More disappointed: Oh Amano what a cheap plot trick.

I WAS JUST TALKING ABOUT THE THIEF SERIES AT DINNER LAST NIGHT AND HERE YOU ARE, HAVING FINISHED KING OF ATTOLIA. What are your thoughts on Costis, actually? I am curious.

I can actually imagine Attolia never sleeping with anybody ever (except Gen, actually). Did she poison Husband #1 on her wedding night (and thus escaped from having to actually sleep with him)?

re. Attolia sleeping with people: I can concievably imagine Attolia never ever allowing anyone to have that power over her; and I can imagine her, in her infinite pragmatism, regarding sex as a necessary tool in the political game. But I lean towards the first view. I don't imagine her being the sort who would put herself in a position where sex was necessary (taking the Why do I need to sleep with anyone, for I can kill / maim / manipulate instead! view), and I think she would view sex as a way in which another person could have power over her. One is vulnerable during sex, and I don't imagine her ever putting herself in that situation. Gen exceptedof course.

if it were possible to say "The thief of Eddis stole Attolia's virginity".
HAHAHAHA. But I am certain he didn't steal it. You can't steal something that was willingly given to you. (And you can be sure that if she hadn't wanted to, it wouldn't have happened.)

Sob! I would co-sign on looks alone, but that actress's filmography is getting in my way! She was Kahlan Amnell in the Legend of the Seeker TV film adaptation, and I think of my friend's name for it, which was LEGEND OF THE BOOBIES. Also I didn't think much of her acting from what I saw of the TV series, but perhaps there were other scenes I needed to see.

He doesn't have a pathological thing against women! He just mostly doesn't notice them. There was one time in Daily Life arc, with the "double date" with Longchamp where he thought a girl was rather cute (I too was shocked! But then, Daily Life, it was mostly for lols), and he enjoyed Lal Mirch's naked bod as much as he was shocked at seeing it.

I am actually not sure this really applies to S.P. as he thinks she's an ALIEN. BUT I WILL TAKE WHAT I GET.
He's clarified his classification of Shitt P as "female UMA", so that's an even firmer indication that he might not object to the ladies! I do love that the people who reference the "poll" part of this post are leaning towards the Gokudera option. XD

I was actually deeply unsurprised by Rasiel, actually. More disappointed: Oh Amano what a cheap plot trick.
I was SO CONFUSED I couldn't find it a cheap trick, though I should have. It went so far into the realm of cliché that it came back and was shocking.

What are your thoughts on Costis, actually? I am curious.
Costis punched a king! He punched his own king! He was specially selected by his own king as totally the kind of guy who'd punch royalty in the face. He is a big lump of dim and honourable and snarky and I LOVE HIM.

Did she poison Husband #1 on her wedding night (and thus escaped from having to actually sleep with him)?
I think she did get rid of Hubby #1 on the day of the wedding. At the feast, so before they even got to the bedroom. Er ... go you, Attolia! Sort of!

re. Attolia sleeping with people: Totally agreed with all your points, but seriously. That (possible) joke. QoA already made all "he stole a queen, he stole a country" jokes on the dust jacket... I'm pretending real hard that Attolia didn't necessarily use sex as a bargaining chip (come to think of it, it's awesome that the books never hint that she might have done), but that she was aware of the possibility that it could be one, and hired somebody to get her used to the act.

Also I didn't think much of her acting from what I saw of the TV series, but perhaps there were other scenes I needed to see.
I'll admit, I was co-signing on looks, never having seen the show. But heck, I used to be in Smallville fandom, where we pretended bad acting was part of the charm. A good script could make it work? (Not that Smallville had that, either. But a theoretical Queen's Thief series would at least have Turner's books to work from.)

Hmm! From the Daily Life arc I really got this misogynist vibe from Gokudera. He really disliked Haru (didn't he call her stupid woman all the time? or was that a bad translation?) and he was allergic to Bianchi (that is explainable as the poisoning-him-all-the-time thing). He was fine with Tsuna's mommy and Kyoko but I relate that to the "All things about Tenth are wonderful" (save recent manga developments in which he went "I am aware of all the Tenth's faults, but what I admire about him is a totally different thing!")

But he was mostly fine in the Future Arc and then on.

re. S.P.: Heh, I think I put more weight on the UMA bit than the FEMALE. And yes, we were all shocked by 59 (faster to type than the real name!) het!

It went so far into the realm of cliché that it came back and was shocking.
YES! IN THE REALM OF CLICHE! Marked with a big X.

I LOVE YOUR THOUGHTS ON COSTIS. THEY MAKE ME HAPPY. :D

He is a big lump of dim and honourable and snarky and I LOVE HIM.
Yes, exactly! Tvtropes describes him as Lawful Stupid and I was :/ it is more than that. They describe him as Honour Before Reason, and that much is definitely true; but it is a condition that afflicts a lot of people in this series.

*tilts head* Attolia's practical enough that I could buy her doing a lot of things as long as there was a logical reason for it. It could work.

HAHAHAHA re. pretending bad acting was part of charm. That is interesting! I would have gone all-out to say THE BAD ACTING IS SO BAD IT'S... SORTA ACCEPTABLE. ;) And yes, a good script could make many things work. :)

You're right, the "stupid woman" thing he pulls on Haru is misogynist. I think I was lenient because he's insulting to everyone in Daily Life, but he definitely does harp on her being a woman. At least the one time he pays attention to Kyoko (when she was going "cute kid!" when he got blasted with the Ten-Year Bazooka), he simply threatened to blow her up like he does everyone else? But yeah, going "stupid woman" half the time, and having little positive to do with women, I can see how the misogynist vibe could come across. I don't think he's that bad about it, especially, as you say, he mellows out in the Future Arc.

Heh, I think I put more weight on the UMA bit than the FEMALE.
Fair enough, so does Gokudera. XD

The Rasiel thing: It's a cliche in a way, but I just felt like it was such an unexpected cliche to use - there was never any hint of doubt about the death of Bel's family! - that it turned around and became brilliant. It was a good way to show how Byakuran's power could be useful.

"Lawful Stupid" is too harsh for Costis! He has a narrow viewpoint, is his problem. People keep having to point out their points of view to him, but he's intuitive enough once he decides he's doing something - like how he picks up hints on taking care of Gen. Honour Before Reason is a definite, though.

HAHAHAHA re. pretending bad acting was part of charm. That is interesting!
A little story, in case you were never in the fandom/watched the series: I read a bunch of Smallville fics that had parts along the lines of "And then Clark put on his totally blank 'goldfish butting into the side of its tank' face; the one he always wore when he lied..." - well, with better prose and less facetiousness. This is because as opposed to acting, Tom Welling (Clark Kent) would just lose facial expression whenever the plot called for him to lie about being Superman. Fandom worked so hard around the source material. XD
