Ever have the sneaking feeling that you turn the phrase 'failure as a human being' into a verb? Which seems like a bad note to start on, but no worries, I'm so high on panic I can't feel anything. Whee! But this weekend I did actually accomplish some things. It's a strange new feeling, but I think I like it.

ANYWAY
I have a dozen of half-finished meme posts, it's ridiculous. There will be a lot of memes going on over here for the next few days. Starting now!

fannish5 for 2010-04-30: Name five songs that remind you of any five characters from fandom.

1. Thief King Bakura - Yuugiou: One Man Army by Our Lady Peace (utube)
Undress your soul, show them your vigor
Are those inhibitions easiest to fear?
Take this gasoline tin
Head up high, walk like a winner
Let the bare feet be the last sound that they hear

A pretty good song for 'I'm going to grow up alone and kill you all'. Except there's a line about "I don't wanna remember falling for your lies" and the Thief King continued to believe everything Zork said. Which a) kinda sucks and b) is also kinda cool.

2. Bianchi - KHR: Famous Last Words by My Chemical Romance (utube)
A love that's so demanding
I can't speak.
I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay, I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home

An easy pick, with the bits about love. The chorus makes me think of Bianchi because it's so straightforward and blunt, and also, for someone who's probably had a pretty terrible home life, she loves her family even as it is and will keep doing so.

Randomly, I'd really like for Bianchi to get a surname - or as the case may be, a first name. Deliver, Inheritance arc! (I'm expecting a lot from this arc. Augh! Having zero expectations is the best way to enjoy KHR!)

3. Odion - Yuugiou; Didn't Leave Nobody But the Baby by Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, & Emmylou Harris, from the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack (utube)

Your momma's gone away and your daddy's gone to stay
Didn't leave nobody but the baby
*
You and me and the devil makes three
Don't need no other lovin' baby.

Dear Odion: your family life sucks and is creepy. Sorry.

4. Hohenheim - Fullmetal Alchemist: Be Human by Scott Matthew (utube)
If I could just be more human...
I'd have so many little babies
And maybe a wife.

Then I bawl. Although it's creepy to see the lyrics 'so many little babies' put just like that, but listen to the song, it sounds better in context. This is also an Al song: Pet kittens 'til they purr, maybe keep a bird, always keep my word; I'd cry at sad movies and laugh 'til it hurt.

Baaaawwwwwll.

5. Jean Valjean - Les Miserables: Warning by Green Day (utube)
mental homes and safety cell communities
did you remember to pay the utilities
caution police line you'd better not cross
is the cop or am I the one that's really dangerous

This is a terrible song call, but there it is, humming along in my head. Jean Valjean struggles with disparity between the rule of law and that which is truly just! And with Javert. All the time.

Bonus: Cup of Tea by The Verve Pipe (utube)
Charlie Brown's miserable childhood, whereafter he moves to England and changes his name to Arthur Dent. He proceeds to never get that fucking cup of tea.

My music tastes have been weird lately. All I want to listen to is
1) Bedrock by Young Money. Here is everything wrong with black American music culture. It's super catchy!!
2) The first fifteen seconds of the movie Whisper of the Heart.
3) Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown album. I haven't been able to bear removing it from my player for probably more than a month, and I don't even agree with it. The way 'Christian' is synonymous with right-wing fundie frustrates me -- but ha, it's a fair perception, and most people have probably experience more of that than the one where it means a community and a sense of peace. And you "don't want to live in the modern age"? Billie Joe, you aren't even using an acoustic guitar.

AND A REC
Gentlemen of the Road by Michael Chabon. Or the full title (in my head, you understand): "♥ Gentlemen of the Rooooaaaad sigh ♥". It's An Exciting Adventure Story, and lovely. The things Chabon does with words! The story has a fascinating intersectionality of race, religion, and group affiliation - I don't know how accurate it is, not knowing much about Europe 1000 AD, but it's convincingly portrayed. I just like seeing European "tribes" rather than skipping straight to "civilisation". Sometimes it seems like Europe had the Greeks and then the 17th century, aside from Asterix.

Also, an in-depth report on KHR 290: NEW FAVOURITE CHAPTER. I laughed so hard. The only thing wrong here is that no-one seems to be making icons of these panels.

that ain't right, fullmetal alchemist, baa baa memesheep, reborn!, books, recs, that's wrong, yu-gi-oh!
