I'm thinking back on last week, and the conclusion is unavoidable that I spent a lot of time being thoroughly horrible. There were reasons, but that's no excuse to relentlessly behave like a jerk. Note to self: Must do better ( Read more... )

ROFL - there is Luke being named Luke and being a cryful protagonist, for one, and then there's the fact that Luke is described as being very similar looking to Tales of the Abyss's Guy, Luke is close to two girls in his party - and it's just the feel of Luke.

Also even more LOL - the original author explicitly has Luke's sister refer to herself as being Promoted to Parent. Also another specific TV Trope.

The hero/villain vs right-hand man/villain for me is just because I was, "... why bother taking so much effort to build up the hero/villain if you're not going to go the right-hand man/villain path?" I know the writer probably wanted it to be surprise, and also there was groundwork laid for the right-hand man/villain relationship, but I sort of went, "... but I wanted to see more of Luke interacting with NICK."

I feel like the way I felt when I watched Star Trek: TNG. Overall very pleased and happy about the show, logically understanding the canon couple, and sort of thinking, "But I kind of was rooting for the route not taken (but clearly signposted)."

To show that Doc Nemesis is made of pure woob, heart of evil gold and all, and we should root for him. *does so.* \o/

You're going to have tell me a bit more about the couple in TNG. I've watched a whole lot of Star Trek with Dad, but man, some of it was before I understood English.

TNG: The first quarter of the movie (early Academy days) seemed to be setting up Kirk -> Uhura (rocking the rebellious fratboy/icy goddess and the player-finally-meets-the-girl-who-won't-be-played vibes)... and then they go and then the movie TURNS UP THE SPOCK/UHURA and has it conclude that way.

Oh, sorry, I haven't seen that acronym for the movie before (man, it has a lot of them). The weird thing is, I was glad the movie didn't go Kirk/Uhura, since a lot of movies have that pairing-trope, but in fandom land the pairing has me going "Okay, where is the fic! :D :D". There's an absolutely fab girl!Kirk/Uhura fic in my memories.

And the Spock/Uhura did come the hell out of nowhere. XD I was down with it, though, I'm easily swayed by the hotness.

I will be honest with you & say I used the acronym because I couldn't remember off the cuff whether it was the NEW or the NEXT Generation. And "TNG" was easier to type than a Google search.

I have pretty much zero Trek history and can see how Spock/Uhura would've been a great change: I think I've read material that indicated the original pairing was meant to be S/U, but it got shafted in favour of Kirk/Uhura.

IT DID COME THE HELL OUT OF NOWHERE, DIDN'T IT? One moment she's a pushy student, the next SHE'S MAKIN' OUT WITH HIM AFTER SPOCK'S MOMMY DIES. I MEAN WHAT. Personally I felt that I would sooner see Spock come to terms with acknowledging his humanity (as opposed for lunging for Reason and Logic every time), and I suppose that a relationship with Uhura could be argued as one of the ways in which he acknowledges his humanity, but I felt it was too rushed in the movie. I mean, the movie wants me to believe that a Spock with so many issues with just acknowledging the grief he felt over his mother's death would be able to enter into a relationship with Uhura at the same time? I know movies are compressed time BUT SERIOUSLY! I DEMAND MOAR.

The thing being that TNG was the name for one of the Star Trek Tv series, hence my confusion. The movie's generally called Reboot, AOS (alternate original series), XI, 2009 ... I think that's all.

I've seen that too. rawles recently did an essay that mentioned it.

MAKE-OUTS! was a weird place to go with regards to consolation. Yes, Uhura, I'm extremely glad you're there for him, but maybe your tongue shouldn't be there for his tonsils? Not right now? But I got the impression from how unsurprised Spock was that the relationship had actually been established prior to that moment. It shed a new light for me on the 'put me on the Enterprise!' scene, i.e., Spock is totally whipped and loves it that way.

'I'll be monitoring your frequency', though, when Spock was beaming off the Enterprise, that was the sweetest. But I also want moar right now, what is this madness I hear about a sequel only in 2011? :(

PS got to go, dinner engagement now!
