Fan fiction: Reflections

Feb 08, 2009 11:14

I haven't written fan fiction for TSP in an age, so I thought I would dust off the old quill pen:

Reflections: Marguerite

It's part writing exercise, part indulgence, based upon two chapters from the original novel, 'Marguerite' and 'An Exquisite of '92', from Marguerite's POV. (Yes, I know more or less the whole novel is anyway!) I love the dialogue, loaded with tension and character psychology, when we are introduced to Marguerite and Sir Percy Blakeney, and the clash of past and present lives for Margot. The poor woman has been travelling all day, trapped in a coach with a man who is polite at best, only to send her brother off to the dangers of Paris. If that isn't bad enough, the Comtesse de Tournay is there to kick her whilst she is down, and deny her a renewed friendship with Suzanne to replace her brother's affections. Fascinating.

However, the only way to add to this scene was to attempt first person - and this may be my downfall! (I hope I haven't fallen into Georgette Heyer's trap of making Marguerite sound like Jodie Foster's Nell learning to talk!)

Please , please read and review, from general thoughts on that section of the novel to nitpicking tenses and grammar. It all helps! (Posted in five sections, to fit neatly into Livejournal posts, with links to next part.)
