my own elusive Pimpernel

Hi guys! I just finished the first book today and I am madly in love with both Sir Percy & Marguerite. I have the 1982 version on dvd but haven't watched it yet, and I read somewhere that it's actually based on one of the later Pimpernel books - is this true, and if so, how spoilery is it? I'm dying to see it, but I don't want to spoil my enjoyment ( Read more... )

Yep, the 1982 film is partially based on El Dorado. I wouldn't say that it's majorly spoilery for the book, but there might be a few elements that may be... less surprising? (Then again, it has been a while since I either read the book or watched the movie.)

hmmm....the real question is whether I can wait till I get paid on Monday to buy more books, or if I give in now and watch Jane Seymour being pretty...

Or on Project Gutenberg, where they don't place so many restrictions on the text.

Definitely give in and watch - the latter half of the film is based on Eldorado, which is about the fourth or fifth book in the series, but it's also a separate story in its own right, thanks to the the way William Bast expertly edited the two books (I'm marginally biased towards the 1982 film, but I'm sure you can't tell ..!) I was introduced to the characters and books through this version, but I still enjoy both TSP and Eldorado as told by the Baroness - the romance is incredible in both!

As to Marguerite, she features in The Elusive Pimpernel,
Eldorado, Mam'zelle Guillotine and The Triumph of the Scarlet Pimpernel, with the occasional scene in other books. She matures an awful lot from TSP to the end, but she's still a delightful character. She has to be my favourite literary heroine.
