We are a family, sisters and brothers. We play soccer with the kids in the park and scream HEY to them only to reply with DIDALAY and it's so funny. Every time I yell it at the young boys I burst out laughing, I bink my eyes and blow Eddie kisses as he turns his head away. Two men pulled up on the street by the park and the windows were down in their car, one was yelling something into his cell phone. "She's fucking hot, and underage. Fucking hooker." They sped away and everybody looked at one another, to make sure that he really said that, that it wasn't something out of a movie. The two young girls were standing there on the corner and the car pulled up to them, and we all got up and we marched. We marched like an army, and we got pepper spray, and when those men saw us they drove off.
The whole day was spent walking around the city, taking in the polluted and ocean sprayed air. I was wearing that pink dress that Des loves with my turquoise shoes, my legs with hair that my grandma makes fun of all the time. We stood on the roof of a music store and played around with the wind contractions, and spun around. Making our way down the hill to the bottom of the city we stood on a cliff over looking a wedding, the grass was up to our knees and a few of us were laying down looking at the clouds. But a few of us were also staring, and one of them yelled, and we all yelled. We yelled for everything, for every fucking person who has ever felt alone, who has ever felt scared, who has ever been hurt, abused, and manipulated.
The homeless drunk man in front of 711 came up to Ava when she got off the bus, she stood around looking for some cigarettes. He kept staring and she smiled at him, he said sorry, he didn't mean to stare, just that she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. She laughed and told him thank you, it's nice to know somebody thinks that. He bought her cigarettes with her money and he kept the rest of the change to buy himself a soda. Want a sip?
