A Dragon’s Heart

Book One - Journey’s Start

Chapter Three

Once Adam returned to his room the next day Andy and Ash pounced on him. Adam brushed them off with a quick broken smile and a quiet ‘I’m fine’. It didn’t fool his eccentric best friends but they backed off. Luckily Adam had had his impromptu beat down with his wet-dream-come-true on a Friday afternoon, so there were no classes to deal with. He knew Dean and Sam would seek him out eventually but he was hoping Ash and Andy would stall them or that Cas would stop them from entering The House of Water.

Though that was doubtful considering Cas was bonded to Dean….

Still, Adam lived in hope. He rolled over on his bed to face the wall, wincing as his bruises stretched across tender skin. Sirenia crawled over his shoulders and gently nuzzled against his cheek. Adam smiled sadly at her.

He felt empty. Like someone had carved a hole in his chest and just forgot to fill it. Adam barely remembered leaving the Infirmary and returning to the soothing environment of his house. He suspected that Sirenia had led the way whilst watching him worriedly.

Michael hadn’t returned after he stormed out. Adam had stayed awake waiting for the angry professor to return. The youngest Winchester wasn’t sure what he’d planned to say if Michael had returned but it didn’t stop Adam from watching the door with red rimmed eyes. Sirenia had curled up on his chest and stared sadly at her rider through the night before prodding him in the morning to answer the Healer’s questions.

It all seemed so bizarre, like he was wading through someone else’s life. Adam stared at the sky blue wall like it held all the answers. He felt completely off balance and had no idea how to fix it.

“Adam, buddy, you okay?” Ash drawled from the end of Adam’s bed.

Andy’s comforting weight settled behind Adam’s back. Bianca jumped onto Adam’s arm and started a poke war with Sirenia with the bend of her wing. It was telling that Sirenia and Bianca touched so openly and without violence.  Badass preened from Ash’s shoulder before leaping into the fray and toppling the other two dragons down Adam’s front.

“Guys come on," Adam groaned as the three baby dragons continued play fighting right in Adam’s face.

“Maybe we should invite the rest of the guys over for a movie marathon?” Andy suggested.

Adam grumbled before hiding his head in his pillow.

“Badass and I will collect the rest of the Avengers!” Ash collected his growling dragon from the spontaneous cage match in front of the youngest Winchester.

“Can’t I mope in peace?” Adam demanded glaring up at his friends.

“No," Ash and Andy chorused.

Adam groaned and hid himself under his pillow as Andy set things up for the arrival of their friends. Sirenia and Bianca settled on top of Adam’s hide away.

“Men suck.” Adam pouted, fishing more sticky toffee popcorn from the bowl. Sirenia licked the globs of sweet toffee from her rider’s hand.

“Not all men suck. In fact I’m awesome,” Ash stated, finishing off his beer. Despite being an ass to Sam, Gabriel did manage to sneak in the best beer and sweets.

“Yeah ok…So it’s just Michael who sucks,” Adam grumbled feeling fuzzy under the weight of several well enjoyed beers.

“Michael sucks ass!” Andy hiccupped as he rolled over on the floor. American Pie: The Wedding played on in the background despite having lost its audience around the middle of American Pie 2. The group were leaning against the chest of drawers at the end of Andy’s bed in various stages of drunkenness.

“You know what! We should tell him what an ass he is! And…And…And how much he sucks!” Garth chuckled, yelling happily at the ceiling from his uncomfortable resting place across everyone’s out stretched legs.

“Totally…” Ed muttered half asleep.

“WE WILL DECLARE WAR!” Everybody jumped as Harry shouted his idea at the top of his lungs.

“To war!” Ash agreed enthusiastically.

“To war….” Everybody else grumbled half-heartedly raising their varying degrees of empty beer bottles. Adam smiled to himself feeling a little better and highly vindictive as Ash and Harry plotted in quiet tones.

You’re not still contemplating Harry’s drunken declaration, are you? Sirenia mumbled sleepily the next night. She was curled up comfortably on top of Adam’s chest. The youngest Winchester was continually surprised by his dragon’s cuddly attitude in private. Sirenia often took every available opportunity to snuggle up to Adam and the teenager was grateful for the moments he could let go and hold her tightly like he had with her egg.

Focus, Sirenia gently chided. Adam sniggered quietly.

I think it has some merit. Sure I get why Michael is pissed off at me and my brothers but seriously…that was John not us. He needs to learn the difference, Adam replied after several moments of compatible silence.

And how do you plan to do that? Sirenia grumbled.

I don’t know yet… Adam answered absentmindedly stroking Sirenia’s smooth back.

Perhaps by working hard and proving you are a decent and trustworthy human being? Sirenia asked hopefully. Adam laughed out loud almost waking his sleeping roommates.

That would be the smarter option. But no…I need to do something bigger.

Translation: You need to do something that will get his attention like a little girl trying to catch her crush's eye, Sirenia muttered and Adam glared at her head.

Shut up that’s not- Sirenia interrupted Adam’s defence by cracking open one knowing glittering eye. Shut up! Whose side are you on anyway?

Yours. Doesn’t mean I’m not going to try and talk you out of declaring war on a Professor and a veteran of war. Must I remind you of your ill-conceived attempt to ‘beat him to a pulp’? Sirenia’s eye was filled with humor. Despite the funny side of Sirenia’s words, Adam was warmed by the distinct lack of hesitation as Sirenia declared her loyalty. Sensing her rider’s appreciative and happy mood Sirenia smiled showing her sharp white teeth.

I’ll try to avoid putting us in that sort of position again. Promise, Adam whispered.

Sirenia nipped at his bare chest. It’s in the past little one. Please move on. Sirenia appealed. Adam nodded softly and Sirenia just sighed knowing her rider too well.

You still love me right? He meant it as a joke but cursed as his tone broke.

Yes. I do. Now sleep little one, we have much plotting to do… Sirenia smiled as she curled into herself and shuffled into a more comfortable position.

Adam grinned into the darkness, his heart a little lighter.

Adam was pretty sure that Potions was a class suited to the eccentric and slightly terrifying Professor Alastair Masters. The classroom was dark and eerie and looked like a cheap set for a Bond super villain lair. There were vials of multi-coloured liquids, Bunsen burners flickering along the benches and large beakers bubbling and frothing on every spare inch of their desks. The Professor was all kinds of creepy. Slow elongated words with a slight hiss and the lurking. Bianca had taken to shivering in Andy’s sleeve whenever Professor Masters approached their shared workspace. Adam couldn’t help the all over cold that settled on his bones when his teacher leaned over to check his work.

The whole class was left traumatised and quivering after an hour in Professor Master’s presence so it was rather fitting that over a bubbling red potion, Adam had an idea for his war council.

I love your brain, Sirenia mumbled in awe as she stared up at her smirking rider.

It wasn’t until a full month after Adam had had his brain child that Ash was able to schedule a meeting with the elusive Gabriel Novak. The youngest Winchester was a little guilty about using the services of the one student that Sam couldn’t stand but considering the delicate nature of Adam’s master plan he needed Gabriel’s expertise.

At least if Sirenia was right about Gabriel and Sam’s attraction, then Adam could use his inside information to bribe Gabriel.

It was, after all, his duty as a younger brother to both torture and ensure that Sam got laid on occasion…even if it was just angry sex.  Sirenia snorted at his attempt to justify his association with Gabriel Novak.

“So you want to…?” Gabriel raised an eyebrow.

“Prank the hell out of Professor Michael Novak,” Adam finished for the pixie like second year.

Gabriel’s ‘office’ was a rented room at the local pub.  A scarcely decorated narrow room with a small desk and three chairs. Balthazar Novak, a fifth year and Gabriel’s older brother, stood in the corner with a single malt whiskey in hand. Together they looked like trouble that would land you pantless in a jail cell in Mexico. Sirenia was proudly perched on his shoulder looking far more confident then Adam felt. It could all end terribly.

“You are aware he’s our brother?” Balthazar smirked over the rim of his amber drink swirling the contents so the soft clink of the sparkling ice cubes echoed throughout the small room.

Adam swallowed nervously and then pulled himself up under their scrutiny. “Yes. But I’m hoping your desire to see him dyed pink will surpass your family instincts,” Adam replied.

Tricks snorted from her position curled up on the edge of Gabriel’s desk and Adam’s lips twitched as he fought the urge to smile. Sibling rivalry was something Adam understood and had pegged the whole plan on the theory it was universal. It was.

“Tempting…Do explain.” Gabriel and Balthazar leaned forward interested.

Adam didn’t fight the urge to smirk that time.

Sirenia preened as the three men huddled in close to plot.

It took Gabriel a week to come through for Adam. A week of nail biting nervousness. Adam could barely concentrate through his classes and had a permanent bruise on his side from Andy poking him back to the present.

Sirenia was sick of her rider twitching like Ash on a sugar high. Adam had the bite marks to prove it. Thankfully he didn’t have to suffer the abuse for much longer as the week rolled around to their next Dragon War class was upon them. Adam couldn’t stop the anxious feeling that squeezed his ribcage. Gabriel had eventually waved Adam away stating that his juvenile ideas didn’t fit into Gabriel’s grand scheme. So Adam had no idea what Gabriel had gone for. The second year appeared to be enjoying the prospect of torturing his older brother so Adam decided to stay out of the way.

As he turned the corner to enter the classroom and spotted the object of his ire and fantasy, he had a brief moment to think about getting Gabriel something nice (like Sam’s used underwear) before he cracked up, thankfully with the rest of his class.

Professor Michael Novak, first runner and war veteran, whose usual attire was pitch black or his house colour, was in fact…

…neon pink.

Originally the gag about dying Michael's clothing pink had been a joke but it had obviously sparked something in the scheming second year.

Screw it, Adam would get Gabriel a picture of Sam naked for the awesomeness before him. Novak did not look impressed, in fact the teacher was a remarkable shade of red and that just cracked Adam up even more.

“ENOUGH!” Professor Novak shouted across the obnoxious laughter.

It did nothing to calm the students. Nadia roared through the large exit on the far side of the cavern effectively shutting up everybody and drawing attention to the pissed off bundle of scales eyeing them all like tiny snacks. Adam swallowed his laughter forcibly and shamelessly hid behind Andy whilst avoiding eye contact with the pissed off teacher.

The youngest Winchester shook with quiet glee for the rest of the lesson. He knew that Michael’s hawk eyed glare had zeroed in on him.

“What the hell did you do?” Sam greeted dumping his books on the table and levelling his younger brother with his best impression of an angry disappointed parent.

“Hi Sam, I’m ok. How are you?” Adam mumbled sarcastically.

Andy snorted beside him and promptly fell into a coughing fit as Sam’s glare targeted the nervous New Recruit.

“Adam Milligan Winchester!” Sam whispered loudly, moving into Adam’s space as Professor Mills wandered around the settling students to drop that lesson’s assignment into the middle of the groups.

We declared war…against my better judgement, Sirenia answered helpfully. Adam glared at his snarky companion who shrugged and went back to preening her scales.

“Adam! He’s a teacher!” Sam stated.

“Thank you, Sammy, for the obvious point. I’ve seen the light, I’ll mend my ways and you’ve made me a better man.”

Sirenia snorted as Adam theatrically provoked his brother.

“I mean it Adam. You can’t just declare a prank war on a teacher! You’ll be kicked out for sure," Sam warned.

Adam rolled his eyes. “Relax he may suspect me but there’s no proof,” the blonde New Recruit said confidently.

Sam raised an eyebrow. “How did you do it?” Sam asked.

“Your baby brother didn’t. I did.” Gabriel dropped into his usual seat, smirk firmly in place.

“You dragged my brother into your sibling rivalry?!” Sam shouted.

“Gentlemen have your domestic somewhere else please.” Professor Mills raised her eyebrow and crossed her arms as she stared their group into submission. A chorus of ‘Yes ma’am’s were quickly whispered from their table. They settled into their work for a few minutes before beginning a quiet argument.

“I didn’t drag him into this, Sasquatch, he came to me. Now keep giant panties on he won’t get in trouble. Michael knows it was him but he also knows I was involved, he sells Adam to the wolves then he’s selling me out too. He won’t, thus we are safe,” Gabriel informed them as Tricks growled low.

“Gabriel’s right, Sam,” Adam added quickly as Sam opened his mouth for what was no doubt a scathing remark about Gabriel. “Just…stay out of it okay.”

“Adam! This isn’t a game-”

“It is though!” Adam whispered angrily. “He pissed me off, did you expect me to roll over and take it? No! Would you rather I did something absolutely horrifying that would get me expelled instead?”

“No! I’d rather you didn’t antagonise a war veteran!” Sam replied, pinching the tip of his nose. Aralia was torn between glaring at a leering Tricks and glaring at Adam.

“Let the kid have his fun, Mamma bear. Better he take out his unresolved sexual frustration with harmless pranks then with sexual harassment.” Gabriel winked and Sam sighed but dropped the subject for the rest of the lesson.

“Thanks Dean. You’re the best big brother ever,” Adam muttered in awe.

“No problem Addy. Think of it as retribution for all those years Michael was an ass too me,” Dean replied smiling slightly at their handiwork.

It amazes me, the passive aggression that runs in this family, Sirenia mumbled rolling her eyes from her perch on Adam’s shoulder. Adam smiled as he surveyed Michael’s bedroom. The tastefully decorated apartment was completely covered in talcum powder giving it the effect of an untouched field after a snowfall. As head of The House of Fire Dean had keys to ever room…in case of emergency…or his younger brother’s escalating attempts to get Michael’s attention with childish antics (as Sirenia was so fond of saying).

The reaction to Michael’s newly decorated rooms came the next day when the angry Professor cornered him in a quiet empty section of the library. Sirenia yelped in warning before Adam was shoved face first into the bookshelf in front of him.

“What the hell!” Adam yelled. The wooden shelves dug in to Adam’s hips painfully as his wrists were pulled above his head and pinned in place against the sharp shelves. Sirenia was growling and hissing around his feet and he knew she was doing her best to claw and bite his attacker. He felt his heart rate sky rocket as he pushed back against the firm muscled body of assailant.

“I know what you’re doing, Winchester. This ends here,” Michael’s smooth voice whispered into his ear. The situation went from terrifying to hot in two seconds flat and Adam swallowed dryly.

“If this is your attempt to get me to stop I’ll inform you it’s not exactly working…” Adam said as he rocked his ass into Michael’s groin slowly. The hitch in Michael’s breath was so quiet that if Adam wasn’t so close to the object of his fantasies, he would have missed the soft exhale.

“Adam.” Michael’s voice was full of warning but it was the first time Michael had called him Adam instead of spitting out his father’s last name. He couldn’t breathe for a moment as he enjoyed the intimate moment.

“Michael,” Adam murmured letting his lust coat the Professor’s name.

Michael shivered and abruptly released the horny New Recruit.

Adam stayed where he was feeling the phantom heat of Michael across his back.

“Stop now or I’ll be forced to retaliate.” The tall teacher’s voice was husky and a little broken. His heavy footsteps echoed away and Adam relaxed against the wooded bookcase.

Are you alright? Sirenia asked as she climbed onto Adam’s knee cap as he sunk down to the floor.

“Yeah,” Adam replied tentatively.

So….should I ignore the cold shower tonight? Sirenia raised her non-existent eyebrow.

Adam whimpered in reply.
