“To rid ourselves of our shadows - who we are - we must step into either total light or total darkness.”
Ares was bemused by this new golden child.
The beautiful boy was all angles and planes, all sharp edges and bright visions. There was something strangely awkward about his catlike grace. Phoebus Apollon was a youth who moved so surely and quickly towards any destination that it occurred to few that he had no reason to run.
The war god was one of the few.
At the moment, his body was held taut as a bowstring with misery. His face was the wrong sort of shape-wobbling cherry lips closed tight, golden eyelashes heavy with moisture and amber eyes distressed, expression sullen-and it was clear to Ares that he was trying to hold back tears. Would kissing those insolent cherry lips shut the kid up? The thought was tempting enough to try…
“Do you know where she is?” the boy half-choked through trembling lips. Ares looked down at the youth’s musician’s hands, which were holding his knees tightly. The long fingers were white-knuckled in their grip.
“Yes,” Ares replied simply, looking down at the boy and trying not to laugh.
“Where?” Apollon asked, stricken.
“Pledging her eternal virginity in front of the six children of Rhea and Kronos,” Ares said, resisting the temptation to roll his eyes. “Honestly, kid. Where did you think? Neither you nor I are on the guest list for that.”
“You mock me,” accused Apollon.
“Yes,” replied Ares simply.
“You have no idea…,” insisted Apollon simply.
“I have many ideas,” contradicted Ares. “I just don’t care about yours.”
The boy’s wide eyes looked at him with complete and utter loathing. Ares stared him back down.
Needless to say, the younger brother flinched first.
