Reality isn't that simple - we are forced to make choices every day that go against the ideal image of what a Christian is, and does (even if we don't realize we are making said choices), and it is held against us because we are simply doing what we have to do to get by.
I used to use this same philosophy and justification the almost the whole time I was a dancer. I was just doing what I do to, to get by. After all, I had a child to support and was $600 short every month on bills...I had to do something to get by right?
Grace does get you through. And God knows we are going against the grain of our very nature and our entire environment. Thats what makes life with Christ so amazing. Once you realize we really do live out the impossible, we really in our everyday, mundane lives ARE doing the impossible - loving our enemies, living without lack even though on paper we're $500 short what we need just to live, seeing the diamond of treasure inside what seems like worthless people...in our every day lives, we do the impossible. "We" means you too, Bill... youre just in a rut. You are doing the impossible. You wouldnt be feeling that way if you werent. Dont get so down on yourself.
Your feelings are correct - because Ecclesiastes says "that thing which has been is that thing which will be." That means the cycles we see around us repeat over and over again and never end. But only GOD can do a new thing. Dont let your attention get stuck watching the cycle of things. See the cycle, then look for Gods hand to change the situation. Because there are ways about you that should be still stuck in a cycle but have been changed.
