So I talked to my best friend from high school, Sam, this evening. She's doing great,it's always fun to catch up with her. :)

She told me that one of our classmates had died this summer, Rachel Speight.

I had known Rachel longer than I'd known Sam. The two of us go way back to middle school region orchestra. That was the only time I ever saw her for a while. We both played viola, she was my stand partner at least once so we always chatted it up whenever region auditions and subsequently the orchestras and symphonies came around. She was always very talkative and very nice (like..Donna level nice).

Rachel went to my high school too, but not for viola - choir (ick). She loved it though and was amazing at it. Ended up in at least a couple of my classes (though the instrumental kids mostly got lumped with the dancers, just scheduling-wise). As salutatorian of our class, she ended up going to Yale for music history (quite the opera buff).

Sam says that Rachel was doing a cross-country (like literally across the country) bike tour for a Habitat for Humanity fundraiser. Her bike went out of control or something and she got hit by a car. Sam thinks it was instantaneous...I certainly hope so.

Last time I saw her was graduation, when she gave a great (nice and short but witty) speech. Wish I had said goodbye then...
