The fact that we have Zune Network trailers streamed on our XBox Live means that I'm finding out a lot more about upcoming movies than I have in ages. And there are so many off-kilter ones that I'm dying to see. Like...

Dirty Girl, which is coming out tomorrow in limited (limited limited hella limited, as in it's playing in NYC, Florida, and Hollywood) release, is about the school "dirty girl" and, apparently, a chubby gay friend stealing a car and escaping their home town on that most quintessential of teenage things, a road trip. (I say "apparently" because everything else came across clear as anything in the trailer, but I had to read summaries to realize that the two defining features of what appears to be in behavior and dialogue a fantastic character are "fat" and "gay".) I'm a sucker for stories about women who transgress sexual norms, and okay, I'm a sucker for roadtrip movies. (True Confession: I have seen the Spears roadtrip movie. More than once.)

Anonymous is the one about Shakespeare where all the academics go OF COURSE SHAKESPEARE DID OR DIDN'T WRITE HIS PLAYS BUT IT DIDN'T GO DOWN LIKE THIS, WHAT IS THIS, HBO HISTORY? but I was an English major, I love period dramas even when they play fast and loose with accuracy, and I am a sucker for trailers with good music. (No, seriously, go watch the Anonymous trailer; while you're at it, watch the John Carter trailer and the Assassin's Creed: Revelations trailers for other examples of fucking awesome music. Yes, I know, AC:R is not a movie but Iron is a great song.)

Melancholia also appeals to me on its "good music trailers" basis and just, I don't know, it looks like magical realism and I eat that up and it's got weird visuals and it'll make me cry in an uplifting cathartic sort of way (I hope) and Kirsten Dunst, clearly my thoughts on this film are well composed indeed.

Also, Pirates: Band of Misfits. Why have you not already watched the trailer? It's Wallace and Gromit Does Piracy and it's not to be missed. Go watch it right now. Go.

Sidebar: I'm reading A Dance with Dragons finally and I really don't know what to make of it. Did I grow up and realize that the equation "sexual violence = REALISM" is a stupid one? Or did GRRM throw in way more rape than before-which is saying something, considering the previous entries in the series? Sans spoilers, there are some great "FUCK YEAH!" moments, as in other books (which are really what I read ASOIAF for) but mostly I am either going "wait, who the fuck is this, why do I care" or ".... ugh, really? really?", so I think this series and I might be breaking up.

pirates, movies, a dance with dragons
