jack of all trades. a person who has a lot of skills. and those skills are not just something that he can do; rather, they are things that he can do good.
but unfortunately, he is also one who doesn't have any expertise. he may know things -- but he is not expert on them. well-rounded, yes, but mediocre. a master of none.
while having many skills is beneficial, it has its own drawbacks. for one, given that the person acknowledges that he has the skills, and enjoys doing most, if not all, of them, would find it difficult to choose which path to take. especially when those skills are not that directly related to each other.
and two, this becomes more challenging when the career is on the line. it is not really healthy when a person jumps from one industry to another. it expresses indecisiveness. plus, while it is good that he has lots of skills, most of the companies prefer an expertise on a specific area -- a specialist, so to speak. again, if his skills are spread too thin, most of them will pretty much of less use (directly) in relation to the career path he took.
the question "what do you want to do" doesn't really help either because that's basically the challenge: he likes doing everything. prioritizing the skills is a challenge in itself.
ah well, the dilemma of the "jacks" -- so many doors, which one to choose?
