I really, really want an AU where Arthur trained as an astronaut at one point.
And that's how he does the twisty-hallway-wtf-where-did-that-badass-come-from scene.
Maybe it was something political, some asshole took a disliking to Arthur or was motivated in other ways to fail him out the program, and Arthur was all bitter and angry and choked on the futility of his own dreams. Some enterprising person was like "Fuck, this guy is good at stuff, and now he's all bitter and and biased against authority, let's recruit him to a life of crime."
Thus Arthur entered dreamshare. It's close enough to the feeling of impossibility, close enough to the limits, and he's lost enough without the guiding force of the last god knows how many years of his life, that he jumps in head first. Most of the practical skills he trained in aren't useful, though some of the computational physics (and all of the ability to think calmly and quickly in life or death scenarios) applies.
And, of course, there are those times when he has to function in altered gravity situations. He gets a couple of looks for his skills in that area (NASA probably never figured that training would be put to use holding imaginings in choke-holds), but no one guesses.
When Arthur's alone in his own mind and feeling particularly nostalgic or exhausted he puts himself under and dreams worlds into actual space, trying to convince himself that floating in there, holding his breath, zero G and all the stars in his eyes, that that is just as good as being an actual astronaut.
It almost is.
