So, I'm going to talk about my baby niece, because she is a-freaking-dorable.
We've been trying to teach her about different cultures. Not a great deal, but we just feel she's old enough to fully know that America is not the only thing that's out there. Part of this teaching is an introduction to languages. It isn't going well in the "she's getting it" sense, but it is going incredibly well in the "this is so freaking cute" sense. Here are just a two examples:
I told her that Russian was a language and kind of where Russia, the country, is. Then I asked if she knew how to say hello to a Russian. She promptly replied that she did. So, I asked "oh, really? How would you then?" She says to me, "Hello, Russian."
Since she has learned that it is possible to talk in Spanish, she has decided she can do other things in Spanish as well and will off-handly remark that she's going to walk in Spanish or sit down in Spanish now.
All in all, we're not doing too well, but it is going to be great to tell her about this in about ten years.
