Audiobooks and regular books

My addiction to audio books is ever-increasing. I've found that by listening to a good book on my way to work in the morning, my mood is significantly improved for at least a few hours. It's also hard for me to think about taking a road trip and not having one to listen to.

The county library is about two blocks from where I work. Now, before I worked near there, it was way out of my way to go there, and this big county library is forcing a lot of the smaller libraries around here to cut back and almost close. So it was generally considered Evil in my mind. It's starting to grow on me, though, because it has the largest audiobook collection I've ever seen in a public or academic library. Heck, it may be larger selection than any bookstore's audio collection that I've seen.

Right now I'm listening to Dune: House Atriedes.

Lately I've also listened to a lot of the Narnia books, though they were abridged. (The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; and The Horse and His Boy) Before those, I borrowed The Golden Compass and Treasure Island from my other library. Good stuff.

I've also been reading actual books lately outside of work. Finally finished The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan, which was really cleverly done. It has a dual time structure, or maybe even quadruple if you count shorter flashbacks, I suppose. The ending didn't entirely satisfy me, but it was good. Also read City of Ember, which was fantasticly wonderful in such a way that I could not put it down without thinking about it for the next half hour or so afterwards, wondering what would happen next. It's been a while since I read any futurism books, probably since I took a class in it in high school. (Wait, no, I did get an audio book of Fahrenheit 451 last fall, heh.) I want to read the sequel to that one, but it was taken out from the library when I was there. (The nerve! :P)

So, yeah... I have been reading and listening to many mg and ya books lately, so I feel rather pleased that I read The Bonesetter's Daughter and am listening to Dune--adult stuff. I swear, when I was a teenager I was more likely to read adult books, but now I like the ya and mg. I think this will be a lasting effect of my attempts at 7-12 teaching certification.

All these stories in my head in such a short amount of time make me want to work on my Nano or start something new. Hmm.
