I really hope that I will get these up at least once a month from now on. Some of this list is from Yuletide, but I'm nowhere near finished reading through the Yuletide entries this year. My own Yuletide offering is
here. The fandom is The Man Who Fell to Earth, and the title of my story is It's Human Position. It's just a little piece of mostly introspective character stuff for Thomas. It's far from the best thing I've ever written, but I don't think I did too badly with it either. I've recced my gift below.
It's kind of a strange bunch of stuff this time. There are only a couple of fandoms that I have more than one item for, and that's only partly because of Yuletide.
The Big Bang Theory
Modern Boys and Girls Vid by
gigglemonster -- Unrated, PGish, Genish
I think this is by far the best vid I've seen so far in this fandom. It's pretty much gen with the boys and Penny, though there are hints of Penny/Sheldon and Leonard/Penny. It's cute, and the song is fun and provides interesting lyrics for the vidder to work with. I recommend downloading it, rather than just watching the embedded video. It was much smoother that way for me. There are a few awkward cuts in the middle, but overall this is very cleanly done. It's cute and enoyable.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Majority Rule by
brutti_ma_buoni -- R, Spike/Xander
Set post-series, roughly in the comic book canon, but it's not necessary to have read those to enjoy this. It felt a lot shorter to me than it is, so I'm not sure how much I can say about it without giving the plot away. Spike isn't quite right, and Xander is having trouble adjusting to living in the UK and working for a well-funded, well-staffed organization. Giles sends them off to investigate mysterious happenings in a little town. Xander is perfect, just the right amount of grown up with responsibilities added into the boy we knew on Buffy. Spike is Spike. I expected, based on the earlier bits to find him a bit more off than I did, but it's there. They just fall into a rhythm so quickly that it's easy to miss. Also, Giles is perfect. I adore him.
Criminal Minds
Safe From Harm Vid by
maichan808 -- PG-13ish, Gen, Reid
Episodic for the episode Third Life, 3x12. I've watched quite a few Criminal Minds vids, but they never really seem to work for me, but this was nicely done.
Dead Poet's Society
Territories that had Become Stone by lordessrenegade -- G, gennish, author listed as pre-slash Todd/Charlie, but I think it works just as well as purely gen
This was my Yuletide gift. I am incredibly pleased with it. It's pretty much everything I ever could have wished for in a DPS fic. It's future fic, set a number of years after the film. It's really really lovely. Please go and read it and leave nice comments for my author.
What it Feels Like Vid by
sdwolfpup -- Unrated, PGish, Genish
While I have always loved Grease, there are some fairly troubling themes to the film, especially when viewed through anything close to a modern feminist lens. This vid really picks at those themes. Beyond that, it's fascinating to see this fairly old and even older styled film set to very modern music. The editing is just stunning.
Start the Commotion Vid by
danegen -- PGish, Hardison-centric
The vidder names it Hardison-centric and through the first 1/3 or so, I would agree. The later 2/3 seem to be as much about Parker and Eliot as they are about Hardison, and it does hint more than a little (though probably not any more than the show itself, so if you don't see any of these relationship on the show, you probably won't in the vid either) at Parker/Hardison, Parker/Eliot, Eliot/Hardison, and Eliot/Parker/Hardison. I'm pretty sure that this is my first actual rec in the fandom, but you can probably expect to see a lot more recs from me. I love this show, and not just because I adore Christian Kane (though I do readily admit to wanting to take Eliot home and take care of him most of the time). I love Nate, don't get me wrong, Timothy Hutton is a tremendous actor and the character is layered and interesting, but at the end of the day it's these three that I come back for (I think I may have been the only person who watches the show that just doesn't care about Sophie).
The Underwire Job by
brown_betty and
emeraldwoman -- Unrated, but I'd call it PG-13, Hardison/Parker sort of, Eliot
This is one of the cutest things I have ever read. Parker decides she wants Hardison. She enlists Eliot's very reluctant help. Things go just about as badly as you might guess. There's a sequel, The Cat-Burglar Job,
here, and apparently a couple more set in that same universe (though I haven't read them yet). It's cute, and if you like the feel of this then I do recommend reading it as well, but it didn't work quite as well for me as this first story.
Progressive Commercials
Electric Sheep by Ceares -- G, Het, Flo/Chad
Yuletide entry. I generally find fanfic for commercials to be silly at best. I make two exceptions. The Mac commercials because Mac and PC are adorable, and these Progressive commercials because Flo is kind of ridiculous, but she still seems more real than many characters on actual television shows. This was a wonderfully surreal little look at just who and what Flo is and the fledgling beginnings of a relationship with her customer, Chad (the guy who's looking for motorcycle insurance). I adored every word of this.
Real Genius
A Knight's Quest by Omorka -- Mature, Chris/Mitch/Jordan, Laszlo
The first 2/3 of this are actually fairly gennish with a little Mitch embarassed longing. This is fabulous future-fic set 5 years after the movie. Everyone has moved on, but they still fit. It's absolutely hillarious and I could almost imagine it as a sequel, it has the right feel for it. There's also a little bit of a stealth crossover going on. The author didn't mention what with, so I won't either, but I adore it.
Sports Night
Breaking Down is Hard to Do by Fox -- G, Dan/Casey
This is a gorgeous little bit of future fic about the boys being idiots. They've been apart for awhile, but Isaac and Dana make them fix things.
The Devil You Know by Phoebesmum -- G, Gen, Natalie, Dan
This is Natalie-Dan friendship fic, set mostly during Dan's relationship with Rebecca. It's mostly Natalie inner monologue, which isn't typically one of my favorite things, but it works here. She's sweet and genuinely adores Dan and the end is perfect.
There's No I In Team by Thefourthvine -- Teen, Dan/Casey
This is one of the single funniest things I have ever read, and it probably has the best overall writing of any Sports Night fic I've ever read. It seriously felt as if it could have been an episode with bonus slash in the last 5 minutes. More than anything, I love that while it is a Dan/Casey story, not a single character gets left out. There's lots of perfectly in character Natalie and Jeremy. Dana and Isaac both have substantial appearances, and even all of the technical staff is important. Kim, Will, Elliot, everyone is there.
So Wise We Grow by
captanddeastar -- R, Ensemble that eventually gets to Kirk/Spock
You know, there was a time when I thought that I hated Kid!fic. My recs lists would tend to prove otherwise. I recced a fic where Kirk's canon son ends up on the Enterprise. I love that concept, and would still really like it if someone would run with it, but I think I like this even better. Spock has a son, sort of. He didn't even know the kid exists, but he can't ignore responsibility for this child. So anyway, to a certain extent the feel of this, kind of reminds me of Shallot's
A Beautiful Lifetime Event in Stargate: Atlantis fandom. It's these utterly clueless guys doing everything backwards. First there's a child, then there's a marriage (again, sort of), and they finally fall in love. Little kid Vulcans are clearly much more fun than I thought they would be. The kid here is adorable, and vulnerable, and still utterly vulcan. One more thing I love about this fic, while it is very much about Kirk, Spock and the kid, every character has a role to play. They're all important (even Sarek and Winona Kirk). This is quite long, but it's worth the read.
Stargate: SG-1
I'm Just a Girl Vid by
kuwdora -- PGish, Genish, Vala
I love No Doubt, and this is one of the songs that made me fall for them. I adore Vala, and this works reasonably well for her just from a lyrical standpoint. When Kuwdora puts them together, they make perfect sense. I don't even really know what to say about this one. I've watched a lot of Vala-centric vids looking for one that really just works. This one does, tremendously well.
Supernatural
I Wish I Could Save You Vid by
bleeding_muse -- PGish, Dean/Jo
I'm not actually a big fan of the pairing. I'm not actually a big fan of Jo, but this was very nicely done. Spoilers through 5x10. The song is Save You by Kelly Clarkson
Than Never To Have Loved at All by
ficwriter1966 -- PG, Gen
Post 5x10, this is how Sam, Dean, Bobby, & Castiel spend Thanksgiving. It's sad, but Castiel brings a sweetness to it that Bobby will reinforce. This is really beautifully written.
Torchwood
Clinging to the Wreckage Until I Got the Message by
paperclipbitch -- PG-15, Owen/Ianto
Good god, I can't believe I even read Owen/Ianto, much less enjoyed it. I've long been of the opinion that these two were the only two from the series you could not realistically pair up. I will now admit I was wrong. This gem is set between the first and second seasons. Every member of the team is some degree of broken, and Owen may be the most broken of the bunch. Ianto, does what he does, he takes care of things. They are delightfully in character, and their relationship wavers back and forth between, something approaching friendship, icy silence, and explosive anger. The general thought that one or both of them could snap at any moment killing the other sticks around no matter the current state of their relationship. This is in places, quite fun, in others heartbreaking, but all good.
The Face of God (or Ianto Hears a Who) by
alex51324 -- G, Gen, Ianto
Gen fic is pretty hard to come by in this fandom, but not quite impossible. What there is, is almost always quite good, and this story is no exception. It's a story based on a teensy little bit of extra-canonical information posted on the BBC websites. That makes this fic very loosely connected to "A Day in the Death," by virtue of a list of seized alien artifacts which include a jam jar containing an entire civilization. They could not of course just dispose of them, so Ianto has been caring for the Jam Jar. It's a lovely little story that took a lot of care in building an interesting alien civilization.
X-Men
20 Things You Might Not Know About Scott Summers by
likeadeuce -- PG, Gennish, Scott
So, I sincerely doubt that anybody here is really surprised to learn that Scott is one of my least favorite Marvel characters ever. I typically find him incredibly dull when I'm not seriously annoyed by his holier than thou attitude. This makes me almost like him. It's short, and just exactly what it says it is. The list seems to wander from item to loosely connected item. They make Scott more than I ever saw him be in canon. The author says it's set in the comic canon, but it also reads quite well as a post X-2, pre X-3 movie universe fic.
Boyscout by
lilly_pilly -- PG-13, Gen, Logan, Warren
I haven't seen a whole lot of fics set post X3 with Ororo and Logan left to pick up the pieces of the school and take care of these already pretty broken kids as if their own hearts weren't breaking. This did an uncommonly good job. This is specifically about Logan's struggle to accept Warren as one of them. It's very well done, and deals with Logan's grief in a realistic way. That's kind of the thing about both he and Ororo, they aren't going to fall apart. They're going to do what has to be done (even if sticking around is newish for Logan) and more often than not, the people around them won't even see the overwhelming weight of grief that threatens to overwhelm them.
Letters and Papers from Prison by Minisimoo -- Unrated, but I'd call it PG-13 to a soft R for violence and disturbing imagery, Erik Lensherr, Rogue, Charles Xavier, Scott Summers
Okay, so there are four people in the list and it is about all four of them, but more about Rogue and Erik than the others. Along with absorbing powers, Rogue absorbs memories. There have been a lot of fics about how she deals with Logan's memories in the wake of the first film, but very little about how she deals with Erik's memories. This is gorgeously done, but it does focus quite a lot on Erik's experiences in Birkenau. The end is excellent. It also doesn't hurt that it draws from the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Elie Wiesel.
The Big Bang Theory/Supernatural
The Supernatural Theory Art by
trolleys -- G, Gen, Sam, Dean, Sheldon
This is an utterly delightful little illustration from the
Kripke Started It meme.
Untitled by
tahirire -- Unrated, PGish, Gen, Dean, Sheldon
This is just an extraordinarily short little conversation. Cute beyond belief. Written for the Kripke Started It meme.
Bones/Torchwood
Old Bones by
mhalachaiswords -- PG, Gen, Angela, Capt. Jack Harkness
I don't think that it's really an secret that I hated the resolution of the Gormogon arc. Zach as apprentice just sincerely did not and still does not work for me. This is a fix-it of a sort. It's also a lovely bit of backstory for Angela. It's wonderful and perfect and it's reality in my little corner of the fandom universe.
Criminal Minds/Dexter
Convenient Parking Vid by
cherryice -- PG-13ish, Gen, Ensemble
Okay, now I really want a fic that goes along with this vid. This is really well done, with the editing almost seamless between the two shows. This is the story of the BAU coming to Miami to hunt Dexter (and possibly his brother).
Doctor Who/Firefly
Out of Joint by HonorH -- Teen, Nine/Rose and canon pairings or UST
This was ever so much better than I could have ever expected from it. Nine and Rose along with Jack get caught up in time and end up on Serenity, where it takes some time, a lot of conversations, and a few detours to get them on their way again. I am especially enthralled with the way River is used in this story. There is perhaps a bit too much time going round and round about the relationships from various points of view, and there's not quite enough Jayne for my liking, but it is wonderful just the same.
dueSouth/Supernatural
Untitled,
Pt. 2 by
novembersmith -- Unrated, PGish, Gen
This is just utterably adorable. Written for the Kripke started It meme, it's really more fusion than crossover, but this works. Wonderful use of Castiel, and the second part has John. This is one of the few fandoms that could have been used for this, that having John show up for wouldn't be just utterly wrong.
New Amsterdam/Torchwood
The Same Place at the Same Time by airspaniel -- Teen+, John Amsterdam/Jack Harkness
I think I've wanted this fic ever since I first watched Torchwood which wasn't until after series 1 & 2 had both aired, quite a bit after as I recall. Two men who can't die, and of course Jack isn't his soulmate, but it sure must be nice to have someone around who understands. Beautifully written. Another Yuletide entry.
Spiderman/X-Men
The Mutant Problem by
xenokattz -- Teen, Gen
This is set in some kind of ambiguous mish-mash of the comics and the movieverse, so if you're looking for something that fits consistently in to a particular timeline, you might give this one a skip. I love it though. Years ago, Jameson gave Peter Parker an assignment to do a photo-editorial on "the mutant problem," he did it, but now years later he is doing another article portraing the problem in a very different way. The bit of story here is incredible, but it's the format that is the big draw to this. It's one part fic and 2 parts art, and all parts lovely.
