Okay, these were the shows I watched tonight. I still haven't watched Sunday or Monday's recorded shows. Maybe tomorrow. Worse yet, Dad was supposed to set up the VCR to record Criminal Minds and CSI: NY, but somehow screwed it up. I didn't notice nothing was recording until about 15 minutes into CSI: NY. Hopefully, I can watch them online.
Dad was really more interested in this than I was. It doesn't feel fresh, and I kinda hate that. It's 2/3 bionic woman and 1/3 Jake 2.0 with nothing new. I wasn't terribly impressed, but as it will be on in our house, I'll probably watch a couple more episodes. Maybe it will get better.
I am quite enjoying her sister, and I'm hopeful that she'll be a big part of what's to come. I'm also interested in the backstory about their dad. Sis is clearly a hacker, as she's been ordered by the court to not have a computer connected to a phone line. The dad sounds like an old bitter hippy. I'm less excited about the doctor's dad. Though I did laugh and jump up and down just a bit when I realized that he was Badger from Firefly. Also, the trainer who was in love with the first chick, he was very familiar to me. I've thought about it all night, and I think I may have finally placed him. I'll have to watch for his name in the credits next week so I can be sure. I think he was on Witchblade, of course I can't remember the character's name, but something in my head is saying Danny.
That's about all I have to say for this show so far. Predictable plot and mediocre acting.
This on the other hand was much better than I'd expected. I'd really watched it almost entirely for the cast. Donald Sutherland is an acting God, and he did not disappoint. Peter Krause was wonderful and fabulous, but good god his hair was distracting for half the episode. And I have to love the Baldwins, every last one of them. It's encoded in my DNA or something. William's probably the worst actor, but I love him anyway. There was a time when he was the prettiest, but sadly I think that time may have passed. So that's why I watched the show, but it's not why I'll be watching it again next week.
It had a lot more depth than I expected. I liked the slightly non-linear format. The massive number of character introductions were handled well. They may have all started out as caricatures, but most of them are already becoming more real. The family is dysfunctional as all hell, but there is some real affection there as well. And Nick's family is great. His wife is, so far, the one completely normal person on the show. I'm not a fan of the Fanning girls, but Elle does a reasonable job with the tiny bit of airtime she had this week. A lot of the events were to be expected, but I didn't mind. I can't say that I was even really surprised when Karen told Nick her suspicions, or rather hinted around them until Nick guessed. I hadn't expected there to be some overriding mystery in this series, but I wasn't surprised. But where in Bionic Woman I felt cheated by a lack of originality, in this show it all just felt right. It was a beginning, a getting to know you.
I don't see myself investing a lot in the ships of this series. Unless Nick is somehow not married later, then I really am very unlikely to ship him with anyone other than his wife. Though, pre-canon relationships could be interesting. Nick basically grew up with the kids, and we know he had a relationship with Karen. My slash colored lenses could definitely see something with one of the boys as well. Also, it's probably a sign of just how firmly those things are over my eyes, from pretty early in the episode I was thinking Tripp/Dutch (I think this is the name of Nick's dad), and really even the stated affair with Mrs. Darling didn't put me off that ship.
A few little things I loved: the cell-phone rings, Patrick's girlfriend, Nick is going to save a playground.
A few things I'm still not sure about: Nick's dad's affair, Karen, the illegitimate kid (though I really want to see how that plays out).
A few things I hated: Okay, so not a few, more like one, how quickly Nick gave in and went to work for the family (either time, but especially the first).
