Dan Wheldon, 2-time Indy 500 winner died from injuries sustained in a crash on track today. I wasn't watching the race, but there is now video on ESPN of the crash. It's the most horrific wreck I've ever seen in IndyCar. Three other drivers were taken to the hospital. Will Powers was complaining of severe back pain. He was still being evaluated the last that I heard. J. R. Hildebrand was evaluated for a concussion. Pippa Mann has a hand injury and was treated for bruising. Fifteen cars were involved.
The decision was made to call the race. The drivers ran five memorial laps to honor Wheldon.
I don't talk about it a lot on this journal, but I'm a big race fan. Indy isn't my series. I'm a NASCAR girl, but I have a tremendous amount of respect for the courage of those drivers. They have so little protection compared to my NASCAR drivers, and they're often moving at much higher speeds.
Wheldon was 33. He is survived by a wife and two young boys. My thoughts and prayers will be with the family.
