This weekend wound up being quite busy but the best part was most definitely the Knights' game against the Northstars this Saturday, because they were AMAZING. They played so well, you guys! This is the team I kept occasionally seeing throughout the season and I hope they close out the season next week playing just as well.
My friend I. and I went to the footy beforehand (loved the aerial marks, and A+ to one of the Demons' players who did a most creditable backflip) but left early so we could get a good seat at the hockey. Just as well, because it was a good-sized crowd.
Newcastle started out strong in the first period and ended the period 2-0 up to the Knights, but the Knights were definitely putting up a fight. We were at full strength for the first time in quite a while and our defence was (unusually...) quite sharp. Our captain Rummukainen was on fire for this game, and was great to watch. And then, in the closing minutes, the Knights scored two goals in 20 seconds. Insane! Polaski was looking great and it was only a matter of time til he scored. (Must be the mullet.) End of the period 2-2, and you should have seen the Knights' happy faces on the way to the change room. ":D :D :D" is pretty much a direct quote there. :D
Second period was just as intense. Newcastle scored a third goal and then the Knights equalised. Both teams were fighting hard. Brown had some nice saves, and one rather scrambly one that had me on the edge of my seat: no idea how that wasn't a goal but the defence backed him up quite well there. #tearmwork Props also to him not getting in a fight - in fact he skated away and pointedly hung out by the bench until it was over.
So the period ended on a draw again, 3-3.
The third period was absolutely insane. Both teams wanted a win, and the Knights had realised that they can in fact play quite well and were really running their A game. And then the Knights scored! In the lead against the Northstars! The crowd went off their faces. They managed to keep their lead for quite a while until Newcastle scored again, bringing the scores to a tense 4-all. And then the Knights managed to score another goal... only to have it called by the ref and then waved off. wtf? This is the fourth goal in three games that the refs have missed, and three of those should have been the Knights'. I know the puck's moving pretty fast, but come on: that's one hell of a missed call, and to have it happen four times is a bit concerning.
Anyway, what can you do? The Knights didn't let it get them down and kept on fighting, and then scored for real with three minutes left on the clock. By this stage I was so excited that I actually forgot to breathe for a while there until I started going dizzy, and my heart rate was through the roof. The Knights took a timeout and then play resumed, and I really hoped the Knights would hold their lead, but then Rummukainen took a minor penalty (I can't remember what for) with 2:01 left on the clock, and the Northstars pulled their goalie for a two-man advantage, a move that paid off for them when they scored two goals, one with a minute on the clock and one with 15 seconds remaining.
And then THE KNIGHTS GOT A GOAL WITH 9 SECONDS LEFT ON THE CLOCK and somehow took it to a shootout. My excitement for this game cannot be textually rendered. Unfortunately the Northstars won the shootout, but it was such a close game, and they all played so well. &TEAM;! Hopefully also the Ice will take some inspiration for the finals from this as well. Show's not over til the fat lady sings, guys!
So yes, an INCREDIBLY amazing game and I can hardly wait for next week against the Mustangs. Sounds like they had another tense game against the Ice Dogs tonight too, so I hope they're really fired up next week and take the win. Go go bbs!
