You need to find out how to start the GUI after logging into Unix in single-user mode. Simply executing the necessary script might well result in an error message indicating what is wrong.
Hmmm, after getting into single user root, you might want to type 'init 3' to proceed into multi-user mode, which might well bring up the login GUI.
Or, heavy duty, run a process trace. Google for the loose words: linux strace, first try 'man strace' from the command line.
cupsd is Common UNIX Printing System (daemon), which you could've figured out with a simple Google. It's not the problem. I never heard of apparmor. It's summarized here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AppArmor
It sounds like a strict security tool that could be the problem, so you might want to disable it.
