The cooling towers of the
Didcot A Power Station were demolished last night. YouTube videos of the controlled explosions abound.
As a coal-fired power station, I'm not at all sad to see it go. As a connection to my childhood, it's a little sad. I remember one day, when I was a small boy (4-5 years old?), my father took me on a train adventure. We got on a train at Oxford, took it one stop to Didcot, turned around, and came back to Oxford. It was the best day ever.
A couple of years ago I was crossing Oxfordshire on my way to
RAF Brize Norton. The sight of those cooling towers from the train window still had an emotional resonance in the way that most of the town of Oxford did not.
