It turns out that buying an aeroplane is an incredibly drawn-out process. I'm almost there, but like Xeno's walk there may still be some time to cover the last little bit. The sequence is:
- Find a classified ad that you like
- Talk to the broker
- Arrange to meet the owner on a day with good weather when you're both free
- Go for a test flight with the owner.
- Make an offer, contingent on inspection.
- Wire the broker 10% earnest money
- Arrange for the owner to fly the aircraft to the mechanic, on a day with good weather when they are both free.
- Mechanic delivers three pages of things wrong with the plane.
- Negotiate with owner over who is going to pay for these things.
- Mechanic fixes these things.
That's as far as I've got right now. Coming up I believe we have:
- Owner finds lost certificate of registration, or signs affidavit saying it's lost
- Owner delivers bank account wire transfer information
- I send owner lots of money, and receive a bill of sale
- I get a new certificate of registration in my name
- I get canvas covers made to fit the aircraft so I can park it outside
- I get insurance
- I get somebody to drive me out to Waterloo Airport, where the plane currently resides
- I fly home!
Today I signed a lease on a 1000 sq-ft piece of asphalt at the Toronto City Airport (next to hangar 1, where the UN DASH-7 aircraft hang out). That's mine for at least a year.
