The Angel Chronicles: Spin the Bottle
Wow. That was spectacular. One of, if not the, best episodes yet. Let's break it down.
- Cordelia: Oh how good it was to see High School Cordelia again! Just goes to show how much she's changed. Although something seemed different. Maybe because of Charisma's age, or the writing, but Cordelia seemed a LOT less snarky and nasty than she was in Buffy S1. In any case it was great to see her :D And it just shows how Cordy is such a different person than her younger self. Almost not recognisable. HOORAY for "hello salty goodness"!!!!!! Because didn't I say I shipped them from S1 of Buffy? This made me happy. Also her interactions with Connor. There should have been way more. But actually young!Cordelia and Connor - not such a great match. He's too dark for her at a young age. I can't see them working. Now her and Xander on the other hand... :D
- Liam: First of all - so glad I finally know his original name. Because it's been bugging me for ages, ever since we saw him become a vamp in a S1 flashback. I swear Darla named him or something. In any case I'm glad I didn't google it. And OMGLOL love him!!! He was so cute!!! The bathroom scene! "I'm invisible!" "No you're not." "...'scuse me." LOL And his interactions with Connor were great as well. Especially the father comments. Another episode which shows David Boreanaz is a much better actor than he first appeared to be.
- Fred: Young!Fred's a pothead. This made me happy :D Also Amy Acker is an excellent actress. She never ceases to astound me. But we already knew that.
- Gunn: Liked the angry vibe. It showed how much better his life is now, how he's changed. And he had some great lines :D
- Wesley: Again, good to see the old Wesley, but again something was missing. Maybe it was the glasses. But he didn't seem the same as in S3 of Buffy. Just that little bit different. A bit surer of himself, I think. Not as upright all the time... I don't know. I'd have to rewatch S3 to highlight the differences. But like with Cordelia, something didn't seem right. But he was very funny! Loved the comedy with the arm weapons :D (Although wtf was that semi-erotic Fred alien bit?! How is it he's turned on by the idea of her basically being raped by aliens??? Lovely. I would say that was a misconceived bit of humour on the part of Joss Whedon. Yeah, the principle is quite funny but I just kept thinking ewewewew. I'm not letting it sway my view of Wesley though. Because I think it was just a bad joke in the writing.)
- Connor: Oh Connor. Poor thing. He's so tortured and abandoned. And he obviously has deep feelings for Cordelia. And why wouldn't he? She's elegant, mysterious, lost, confused, sexy... It's not like I want them to end up together or anything. Angel/Cordy for me. But I understand the ship, or Connor's part anyway. Anyway, back to the episode. That bit when he saved the prostitute... Oh my heart broke for him. He may have grown up in a Hell dimension, but he still has all these ideas about honour and valour. I just love this kid. Don't care what anyone says. ALSO OMG CAN'T WAIT FOR FAITH TO COME BACK BECAUSE DUDE WHAT A GREAT SHIP. Anyone else?? (Also this occurred to me - Dawn/Connor? I ship her with Spike, personally, but I realised they have so much in common, not just that they are unfairly labelled as the "whiny teenager" of both shows. Anyone else see this ship's potential?)
- Lorne: His part broke my heart. Even him telling the story was bittersweet. And the ending, when no-one was there... A tear came to my eye.
No matter what Whedon's like in real life, he is still the master of storytelling. Because wow, this episode. Hilarious but so many insightful comments made about the characters, relationships, youth, blissful ignorance, and the burden of knowledge. The ending especially was excellent. Basically this episode was Tabula Rasa for AtS but IMO it worked better. In any case an excellent episode.
