Ok, I'll continue my Beach analyses later. Right now, I'm watching The Avatar and the Firelord and something occured to me. Aang was born right after Roku died, right? Aang wasn't called as Avatar for 12 years, so that's 12 years worth of war.
This is all cool when you think of how unaffected the Air Nomads were - obviously the Fire Nation invasions hadn't got to them yet. BUT Aang had a friend in the Fire Nation - Kuzon - and it is established in the episode The Headband that Aang travelled to the Fire Nation a few times and learned their customs.
HOW COULD HE HAVE DONE THIS IF THE FIRE NATION WERE HOSTILE AND DECLARING WAR ON THE OTHER NATIONS???
I find it very unlikely they would have let a kid from one of the Air Temples visit their cities if they were in the process of invading the other nations. And it's established that Aang was born after Roku died, so the war would have been going on for at least 12 years. More, maybe, because I think before Roku died Sozin had already declared war.
If someone has a theory of how this makes sense please tell me. But to me it seems like they should have really considered the timeline of events before establishing that Aang visited the Fire Nation. And he couldn't have visited a colony, because the colonies were obviously a product of the invasion.
Sighs.
I could forgive this if they had written that Aang visited early on, because they might have changed their minds about how they wanted to write the timeline later. I could even understand him having a Fire Nation friend - it's possible that Kuzon's family could have left the Fire Nation once the war started. But no, they establish that Aang visited the Fire Nation 4 EPISODES BEFORE THIS ONE.
Oh well.
I still love the show of course. I'm just nit picking!

EDIT: oops, I lied, there were colonies! Yay ok, so I'll just assume Aang visited the colonies. Which is still a little odd if the Fire Nation were actively invading the other nations. I mean, why would he be allowed there? And would a Fire Nation colony really let an Airbender in?
These are open questions though, and I'm just gonna assume this is what happened. Still. A bit sloppy on the writing there. But at least the problem is solvable, if a bit shakily.
