Changmin talked in the garden with Yoochun’s dad, a current Cabinet member. Then when he walked in again, there were not many people left in the grand hall of the Park mansion. All were Park clan members, and the sole reason why Changmin hadn’t been kicked out yet was that he was Park Soo-ae’s boyfriend.

But Junsu was still there, though he wasn’t even a bit Park. Exactly why Changmin stayed until now - he wanted to see what Junsu and Yoochun would do together. The closeness those two had been displaying all night drove Changmin sick.

He saw Junsu and Yoochun walking towards the piano in the middle of the room.

“Do you remember this piece?” Yoochun asked, hands moving on the keyboard in a melody he knew so well.

Schubert’s Fantasia D940.

“This…” Junsu said uneasily. Why would Yoochun choose this piece to request Junsu to play with him? Junsu felt reluctant, even thought he tried to hide it. D940 was a piece that he had played with Changmin when Changmin had still lived in his apartment. It reminded him of Changmin everytime, which meant, it also evoked pain and heart-break. To play the piece now was the last thing Junsu wanted to do.

However, Yoochun insisted. “Seems like music school doesn't teach you this. Do you know why Schubert composed so many 4-hand pieces for the piano?”

“Why?”

“Because he had a lot of good friends whom he could play the piano with. Junsu, am I your good friend?”

“Yes, of course…”

“Then?”

There was another moment of silence.

D940 was a special piece… because it was about the only spiritual thing Junsu had done together with Changmin. It was special for Junsu.

But, when he thought of Changmin...

Probably not - Junsu’s brain and reason told him. The thought gave Junsu’s heart a pang, but it was true: Changmin wouldn’t care. By now Changmin had probably forgotten the piece, or that they used to play it together. If he could forget Junsu the person so quickly then what was a piece of music?

If it was only Junsu who held onto the past, it would be both pointless and pathetic.

So Junsu acquiesced with a sigh. He moved a bit to the right, giving space for Yoochun to sit down next to him. It took some time for them to settle. Meanwhile, Junsu looked at the piano carefully. It was a ritual Junsu always carried out, as a way to make friends with an instrument before playing them. For that, he wasn’t aware that Yoochun had been looking at him closely.

There was some more seconds of silence, before Yoochun said, “You ready?”

“Yeah.”

“Then, I’ll go first.”

Yoochun started.

After some years of lacking practice, his playing was no more flawless, but still rich in emotions, flowing beautifully like a mature cascade.

Then, there came Junsu’s music in its utmost grace and emotion.

The sounds made by Yoochun and Junsu blended perfectly, even though they really differed. Yoochun’s was low and assuring and loving, while Junsu’s was somehow innocent in its high tone, and exquisite in the variety of sounds produced. There were gaiety, naivete, something like credulity, then strength and energy, and power and an undertone of grief. It rendered people speechless.

It was not at a concert that they were playing now, so there was something so intimate and nature flying in the atmosphere.

Despite the initial reluctance, now Junsu had become relaxed. He always knew as a fact that Yoochun was the one most suitable one to play with him in a duo, but had quite forgotten how it was so. Now, he was feeling it again. Even when he closed his eyes he could sense the flow of music running through his veins, and he realized that, in the end only music matters. The thought of having played this very piece with Changmin in a seemingly distant past gave Junsu’s heart much pain, but the music itselt washed away everything.

After all, love may end but music lives on. To move on, Junsu had to keep playing.

Junsu was washing his hands when someone rushed in, pulled him into a stall and slammed him at a wall. He was too shocked to utter even a word. All blood ran away from his face and he was deadly pale and scared.

There was Changmin’s face - Changmin’s face in extreme wrath. The veins on his temples were pulsating and his face was all red, his breaths hard and audible. Changmin had seen and heard everything. He was not jealous - he was furious.

“You, how dare you,” Changmin bellowed quietly, “You played with him my piece?”

Junsu’s heart beat wildly. Changmin looked scary, like he was going to kill someone, and that someone could very well be Junsu. “What… what are you talking about?”

“My piece. Just now. How could you?” Changmin clenched his fists. Junsu could hear cracking sounds from there.

“You must be… mistaken. It is Schubert's.” It was a mistake, indeed, but it was more like Junsu’s, for what he had said sounded very much like a provocation.

There was a long moment of silence following that. When Junsu stole a look at Changmin, he saw a mixture of both anger and pain in his countenance. With time, the pain part got more visible. “What other things that are mine,” Changmin growed in his throat, “that you’ve given him? Tell me.”

“What?”

“I mean, have you slept with him?” Changmin caught Junsu’s chin in his iron grip. The pianist grimaced in pain. “Let go,” he managed to say.

“Have you?” Changmin’s eyes were blood red. It scared Junsu. “What are you… talking about? Let me go!” He used all his strength to push Changmin away. It was quite a struggle before he managed to break free. By the time he had done that, they both had become messy, suits crumpled and hair out of order. Changmin only seemed more provoked when Junsu so completely refused to bear even a touch from him.

Changmin hated Junsu. Absolutely hated Junsu.

“So… the Schubert piece… D940… You played it with him. And Karoline Eszterházy and Schubert… Have you told Park Yoochun that story too? Was it the way you got his attention?”

Changmin muttered in a scowl. The memory of that night in Junsu’s apartment, when they had played the piece together was still fresh in his mind. And it wasn’t just music that mattered here - it was a whole story to go with it that gave the music its special meaning to Junsu and Changmin. And yet… Junsu had played it with Park Yoochun, as if it was a normal piece of music. Changmin couldn’t believe it at all. Then probably even the story wasn’t special. Probably Junsu told it to everyone - the thought hit Changmin hard.

He said in utmost disgust, “Is this your favorite move, to play that piece and tell people that story? Of love and differences in social standings that pose as obstacles? Is that how you poetize yourself and bewitch people?”

Junsu’s face got red. Was Changmin implying that Junsu liked to trick and lure people? “You’re not being coherent.”

Changmin felt so much anger he could hardly be sensible.

“Don’t pretend, you understand me perfectly. With this little technique you’ve amassed quite a collection of admirers, right Junsu-ssi? Remember the one named Choi Siwon among it? He was quite smitten with you wasn’t he? Enough to commit suicide for it?”

Junsu’s face turned from red to white. The name Choi Siwon called up the extreme guilt Junsu had always felt and it tortured him. “Why… How did you learn about this?”

Junsu’s confirmation exacerbated Changmin’s temper. So there were really other men here. “You admit,” Changmin smirked darkly, “I wonder what other machinations you employ to seduce people.” Looking around, he added bitterly, “Do you see how familiar this setting is?”

Junsu also looked around. They were inside a stall of the restroom.

“You remember the first time we had sex? In the toilet of that bar? What amazing blowjob you gave,” Changmin laughed morbidly, “I’ve always wondered, how come you’re so good at it. This innocent face is quite something right? It hides how professional you actually are.”

“’Professional’?” Junsu repeated dangerously.

“Yes, ‘professional’. How many men have you gone to bed with? Seems like you have a thing for rich people, don’t you? Park Yoochun, Choi Siwon, me, who else? What's your reason? Money? Influence?”

“Shim Changmin, you…”

“Yes, call my name,” Changmin continued his taunting. He was so mad anger was blinding his reason. “I like hearing you call my name very much. Why don’t we take this somewhere else? So you can put those skills and that body of yours to their good and proper use? What do you say?”

Right that moment, Changmin felt all lights become dark and some stars were fluttering in there. Along with it was a numbing, throbbing, hot pain on his face.

Junsu had just punched him.

Junsu had even used all his force and so Changmin felt blood wetting his mouth. He had also heard a “crack” sound upon the point of collision and so he put his hand on his face to check whether any bone was broken or cracked. No use. All he felt was a mind numbing, terrible pain running to all parts of the face, but could not tell the exact location of the wound.

When he had regained balance and looked at Junsu, he saw the pianist wild in his rage - something Changmin had never seen before. “You… you bastard!” Junsu said. Junsu never used harsh words but now he certainly was employing them.

“You… If you don’t like me and only see me as a toy, at least I can take it because to choose how to feel about me is your right… but to think about me that way… to look down on me… to insult me like that… you… you…”

Junsu was so angry he couldn’t speak properly. There was extreme pain in his face. Until finally, he could arrange his thoughts better. “You’re horrible. You used me and looked down on me... It's fine."

There was something sounding like a sob but when Changmin looked up, he saw nothing on Junsu's face. Junsu continued, "But today is the end of it all, I assure you. I shall never see you again.”

With that, Junsu rushed towards the door. Changmin could hear the heavy sounds his shoes made with the marble floor, before even they disappeared.
